Apparently the more mixed you are the more likely you'll be attractive. Who knew! No wonder so many people think I'm meh, I think my traits evened out ok but just a twinge too "Italian" looking to be "conventionally" attractive. At least my mom was admiring my nose, she said I had a nice Roman nose, not her potato nose lol. What I do think is attractive are people who have unique faces, so generic mixing tends to produce more attractive people. Oh boy I hope my kids are models.

Yes, genetic and other heritable factors are going to play a role... But I don't think it's going to be as strong as many people assume.

A lot of raw attractiveness is related to symmetry. Symmetrical faces are rated as much more attractive than asymetrical faces. This has been proven scientifically by asking people to rate photo's, then taking the same photo's, "cutting them down the middle", and producing a new photo my "mirroring" one half over to the other side.

People rate the "mirrored" faces, which are perfectly symmetrical, as more attractive than the non-mirrored faces.

You ca try it out on your own face here http://www.pichacks.com/welcome.php ... you just have to be careful to set the centreline correctly ... although it doesn't work for everyone as "eye spacing" and "face breadth" is also an issue, so some people with highly asymetrical faces will get weird results (where mirroring one side puts the eyes too close together to be attractive, and the other spaces too far apart).

This is important as symmetry is very heavily influenced by developmental factors... nutrition, health/illness, exercise, and other factors that aren't genetic or highly heritable.

So... Genetics are going to have an effect... But it's going to be far lower than you'd expect because symmetry is massively affected by your environment during growth.

I remember reading an article about this. Basically, let's say a NFL linebacker that looks like superman marries a petite cheerleader who has the prototypical super feminine face and body. You've got two people on polar opposites of the masculine/feminine feature scale, but they're attractive because they are on the "correct" side of the scale.

Problem is when they have a daughter who is built like a linebacker with a square jaw and is 6'0, and have a son who is short and built like a petite cheerleader with feminine features. They are polar opposites, but on the "wrong" side. Obviously this is a huge oversimplification, but it does happen often.

So basically, how does genetics work? In general, attractive people make attractive children. Sometimes those pesky recessive traits surface, but how often does this often?

I've noticed that two people of a different race who are both average looking can often have a beautiful looking child.

Do beautiful couples always have attractive kids? How often do they have an average-looking kid? Or a below-average-looking kid?

Not always. Example: Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's kids.

Problem is the same genetic traits which make men attractive can look unattractive on women, and vice-versa. The same square-jaws, broad shoulders and strong bone structure which looks great on my brothers and male cousins, makes me and my sister look plain AF.
