very attached to their mothers.
work in a male dominated field.
Bald.
Not attractive, but definitely not hideous. Most where just average looking guys. Average build, average face, average height.
on the spectrum. Most had a strange socially isolating hobby.
meek, softly spoken.

Emotionally oversensitive/thinks he feels pain deeper than anyone else.

I'm basing this largely on my cousin, who is a 50 year old with one sexual partner. She broke up with him 25 years ago and he announced 'I will never love again'. And that was it for him. Whether he felt more pain at their break up than any other person in the history of the world, or he just thinks he did, I see this attitude in a lot of the FA/Incel people who post here.

They appear to think that rejection is more painful for them than other people, that their social anxiety is worse, that we don't understand.

I don't think there is a "typical" 40 year old virgin in any real sense because 40-year-old virgins are pretty damn rare.

But I imagine the #1 factor is religiosity/traditional attitudes towards sex and marriage.

I would guess he would look somewhat like the character in Napoleon Dynamite (the brother of the main character). There'd be a higher chance of him being ugly and/or unattractive, possibly short -5'8" or lower. Likely on the spectrum.

Shy Asperger guy, relentlessly bullied, sexually abused by predatory women and had to wait for support to catch up. 1st gen Aspieness Christian, internalised Joyce Huggett, and Judeo-Christian values, so was socialised into sex only being part of a committed ltr or marriage.

he's a guy who didn't decide to get married, which resulted in ending up as virgin, for he lacks 8/10 looks, and the only way he'd ever have of having sex was by getting married and he decided not to.

He is an at least decent, interesting and moral guy with a good, demanding job but below average looks or some undesirable physical traits. He had too much respect for women at least until his thirties. Above all he is strong because no weak man can bear the burden and stigma of loneliness.

A 40 year old virgin is probably a video game nerd who has no social skills, doesn't work out, has no muscles, no tattoos, and lives with his parents.

His personality is likely very smart and nerdy. Talks about WoW, clal of duty, and a bunch of things which make women drier than a desert downstairs.

What kinds of things cause a person to get to be 40 and never have had sex?

Lack of masculine qualities, and being too nerdy.

Now of course some BPer is going to reply to this comment and be like "WTF I know this guy that plays videogames all day long on his couch and has girls go down on him while he plays in his mom's house". These anecdotes only exist in just world fallacies, they don't exist in reality.
