I've thought for some time the biggest differences in the genders was interest, not abilities.

As an engineer, it's been made extremely obvious to me by dealing with my female coworkers that girls don't think differently/worse when approaching engineering task than men. Any girl or guy that puts in the hours will perform at roughly the same level, but for whatever reason there seems to be more men interested in putting in the time to become engineers.

I suspect while some of this is culture, most of this is biology.

In my experience motivation is the biggest factor in success. What's the thing that limits the average person from running a marathon? Their natural talent? No. It's their motivation and drive.

The article is about a study that shows teachers mark boys higher than girls in maths, even when they perform the same. This obviously impacts self-perception of ability.

FWIW, I really don't get it. I went to school with tons and tons of girls who were brilliant at maths. I myself did the hardest maths available at a high school level and excelled at it (as in I scored in the top 2% of my state) and I'm not even mathematically gifted. So much of maths is just about the willingness and inclination to apply yourself -- I know that at the seriously high levels this is less true, but I'd posit that most of the people I know who are now doing shit like engineering or whatever didn't have much higher levels of innate mathematical ability than myself. And naturally? I fucking suck at maths, tbh, imo.

Whether or not you do well at school or pick up particular skills is mostly down to nurture, especially in neurotypical people.

That's even true if you just have a section asking about your gender at the start of the test, no need to tell them that they will perform worse, society already takes care of that.

Although not completely opposed to genetic differences, it suggests that culture plays a very important role.

Men and women have the same culture... Also nobody denies the social influence. But people do deny genetic factors.

There has always been a gap in math performance in girls and boys, but as women have been more and more liberated throughout time, the gap gets smaller and smaller

Now to a different topic: Men and women typically have different mental problems, the more women get liberated the more they get male problems, but in addition to them also female problems. I think male problems stem from works and responsibility. If women do work and take responsibility they will get them. No idea why women have the typical problems but working and taking responsibility doesn't make them disappear. They just get both.

Here's the thing. I went over two of the studies in the bibliography and both of them seem super badly designed. The first is Spencer's study. Quoth the APA article:

Steven Spencer and colleagues explored gender differences among men and women who had a strong math background. They found that merely telling women that a math test had previously shown gender differences hurt their performance.

... Aren't you controlling for the wrong variable?! Since Spencer controls for math ability ("math background"), all Spencer's study shows is that women are more affected by anxiety than men assuming equal math ability. This explains nothing! If you wanted to check whether anxiety is the explanation for the performance difference you would control for, well, anxiety.

The other study I looked at was the 2014 one by Ganley et al. In this study they take college students and just show a gender difference in math ability, working memory and anxiety, and a correlation between these 3. So basically the same problem as Spencer's, this study goes from the claim that "anxiety correlates with math ability" and "women have more anxiety" to "anxiety could be the primary explanation for women's being bad at mathing". A similar study could be made showing a correlation between height and math ability (cause you can see the board better), and women are less tall than men, therefore height is the culprit for women's sucky math!!
