What my friends and I experienced all follows a pattern:

When you're young and immature, sure. That attention feels good because you're figuring out the power of your budding sexuality.

Then someone inevitably takes it to far, so the attention in general starts to take on a creepy vibe. This goes on for a year or so.

Then it just ceases to be a thing you think about. It just becomes part of interacting with the world as a woman. You tend not to notice it until the attention stops. Sometimes it's the wall, but for many women (including me), it stops when you put on the engagement ring. (The episode of How I Met Your Mother when Robin gets engaged and becomes invisible is right on the mark)

Then, after a year or so of being frustrated about it/feeling guilty for being frustrated, it stops mattering and you go back to not caring.

No, because it has no value from most people and is more of an annoyance than anything.

This applies to a lot of things eg. I knit. Non-knitters tend not to know what they're looking at and are easily impressed by anything. Knitters know what is difficult and what is easy and can have an informative conversation about it.

I usually pretended (when younger) to be a guy online because I'm tired of standing out for being a minority female. Anonymity as your basic male online is relaxing.

Not all woman get attention all the time. I certainly don't. Its a bit of a myth that women have it easier than men in this respect. If you're not "hot" you won't get attention. After years of going under the radar, I actually find receiving attention - and weirdly I seem to be getting more as I get older - makes me feel a bit uncomfortable, even from my SO, which infuriates him. Not everyone wants to be centre of attention.

And who the hell has time to sit around making fake internet profiles. Don't you people have jobs?! (Although, as we learned from the Ashley Madison fiasco, that is actually a job...)

Well if my 15 year old step daughter is any indicator, getting attention from any boy above her hotness line gets "OHMYGAWDICANTBELIEBEHESSAIDHITOME!!! " and any one below it gets, "Ewwwww!! Creepy!! He said hi to me...."

It's addicting to both sexes. Attention = acknowledgement of your existence. It's almost as good as validation. It's also the explanation for the popularity of internet trolling, a practice of both sexes.

It sounds to me like you're simply not used to getting attention in your normal life. I imagine if you're given attention every day since puberty, you become inured to it.

Yes it is. Women as a group thrive on attention and desirability. If it isn't we would not be seeing women posing or taking selfies and then posting them to Imgur or Instagram or Fakebook or Twatter to fish for likes.
