Person who wasn't into hookup culture here: I married another person who wasn't into hookup culture. Did just fine, happy with the result, don't feel like I missed out.

There is way too much manufactured outrage around hooking up... do it if you want, or don't. There are plenty of options either way. There will always be people who are promiscuous and people who are not.

Thats hardly forever alone. It might feel like it when you're 20, but it really isn't.

I wasn't into hooking up with guys I wasn't in a relationship with in college - just because I'm not into that. So, I didn't. Or have a relationship. I had a good time, and made friends, and studied. I wasn't alienated - you can have a good time without fucking random dudes/girls. Other people don't really give a shit if you're going home with mates or going into someone's bed at the end of the night, if you're a person they can have a good time with. So how are you alienated?

And I live on the campus of a university/work with university students right now. Seems pretty much the same as when I was there in that regard.

The phrase hook-up is new and Tinder is new, but liberal attitudes to sex and relationships on the one hand, and "forever alone and demisexuals” on the other are hardly new and have been around since, what, the late 1960s early 1970s?

Especially if we’re talking about college campuses.

John Updike was writing about this kind of thing from at least the 60s.

Are you referring to people who genuinely don't want to participate in the hookup culture but are repulsed by it? If that's the case it's no big deal. There are lots of more conservative/non drinking student groups on campus to join. A lot of my friends just made a league of legends club lol.

Now, if your talking about those who want to be in the hookup culture, but can't, for some reason, it doesn't look too good for them. I am honestly not sure what to say. If a girl is literally unable to get guys she thinks are attractive to get to hookup with her, she is pretty much screwed. Same with guys.

The same thing that happened to every other non-promiscuous young person of every other generation post-sexual revolution; they realize what they want and lock into monogamy with a like minded individual from an early age (high school sweethearts, college sweethearts, Mrs. degrees, etc), or they maintain their standards and remain single (and sexless) for an indeterminate amount of time.

Same shit, different era; now we just have the internet to loudly complain about it and make it seem like a bigger problem than it is.

Is hookup culture all that "new."

I know Grease is a movie/musical.

But it's based on teens from the 50s.

Didn't kids "hook up" back then.

Maybe they didn't call it that.

And the 60s/70s/80s honestly seem like the "free love" heyday IMO.

I think the culture now is probably more restrictive in less obvious ways.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High was a movie too.

Seems like the youth have always been frisky. At least for the past 60+ years.
