I don't think making fun of someone for being a virgin/unattractive is OK, however the term "neckbeard" usually applies to men who have inflated egos, pretentious attitudes, act like assholes to everyone and then complain that they're "too nice", harass people online, disrespect everonye who doesn't share their beliefs, hate on religious people, have ridiculously high standards but refuse to even bathe, are often blatantly racist/sexist, you get the point. Just go over to /r/justneckbeardthings. Some of the posts are mean, bullying posts of just random fat guys, others display true neckbeard behavior. It's very, very bad behavior.

I'm against the idea of making fun of any virgin/fat guy just because that's how he is. But if someone is truly acting like a raving asshole and acting like a pompous jerk despite being unattractive and completely unaware of how obnoxious he really is, yep, it's worth remarking on. And it would be worth remarking on even if he was attractive, although the insult would be different.

I am sure there are situations where there is nuance or it is parody or used to make a point but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I HATE THIS EXPRESSION.

But here's a little anecdote, though personal anecdotes are annoying. I didn't really know what it meant. However, two acquaintances of mine are getting married. The woman is a physically perfect, hot beautiful, kind, exceptionally brilliant woman. The man is also brilliant, nice, kind--but he is overweight and he has a beard ON HIS NECK.

He's also a gaming nerd.

They were telling me about their pending nuptials and I suddenly realized 'neckbeard' actually literally means 'a guy whose beard goes down his neck.'

It was like this horrible moment where I went (in my head) HE'S A NECKBEARD. THIS IS WHAT A NECKBEARD IS: HE HAS A BEARD ON HIS NECK.

I feel terrible describing him this way. He's great, she's great, they are great together. They already live together so I'm doubting either is a virgin. The likelihood they were both virgins when they met is pretty high though. The woman is extremely reserved (but not shy--she just conserves her words, she's very gutsy and has a strong character). The man...I don't know. I could see him having had a girlfriend. Who knows.

...maybe I was wrong that a gaming nerd who is heavyset and has a beard on his neck is a neckbeard? Is that what a neckbeard is? I guess I never imagined that it was so literal.

I disagree with the fact they are enforcing gender roles. What ti actually does is confuses the said beta male or unmasculine male even more. You have tons of college seminars about "healthy masculinity"(which discourages assertive or leader-like behavior by males), you have very few masculine male role models, and you have the masculine role models being replaced with female ones.

Overall, these insults don't reinforce gender roles, because the opposite of their current behavior is also discouraged or criticized. I think men as a whole often don't know where to fit in this new, third-wave culture.
