How you generate income is mostly irrelevant. Having enough of a bankroll to have Fuck You Money does. It doesn't matter what level of the social strata you're on, if you have the savings to maintain your lifestyle for 24 months of no income then you are truly free. Then getting fired, hurt, losing a major customer, etc are minor inconveniences. Your stress level drops to nil, and it opens up a ton of possibilities.

I own multiple small businesses, which have been my sole income for the past 5 years. It has it's perks, and it's drastically better than a toxic corporate environment. But it's not significantly better than a really good corporate environment, and certainly not the utopian ideal it's made out to be.

If you are self employed you have to be extra vigilant not to isolate yourself. I've been self employed my whole life and sometimes it would definitely be nice to interact with other people once in a while during work.

I was self-employed for 20 years. My first business was bee keeping. Failed. My second business was a few pawn shops. Never made more than 18k a year while assuring myself I was "building the business". Showed up first, went home last, and didn't get paid until all of my employees and the bills got paid. Then I got legislated out of business and filed bankruptcy on 500k of debt. Lost my wife, my house, my credit, everything. Had to start over at age 43, working as a temp in a warehouse.

7 years later, I'm a licensed banker working for a large corporation. Great benefits, tons of vacation, every holiday off. I'm making more than I've ever made in my life. I do have a boss who tells me what to do, that's true, but hopefully "what I'm being told to do" has been carefully considered by people way smarter than me, making a lot more money than me. I do what they say, and I get better at my job. And if my current job fires me, I can take my skills to the same job at a different bank. I took my ego out behind the barn and shot it, and that's made me a better person.

Most small businesses fail inside of 5 years. Henry Ford failed, what, like 5 or 6 times before he made it big? TRP advocates not getting married because there's a 50% (or 60% or 70% or 80% depending on who's doing the posting) chance of losing everything when she ultimately decides to divorce you. In business, you have a 90% chance of losing everything within 5 years. If you're lucky, it's because of your own incompetence, and you can learn from that. All too often, though, it's just the finger of god coming down and squishing you like a bug. Could be the government, could be the economy, could be that your bank won't extend your loan, could be that you lost key personnel and just can't survive without them.

If you want to work for yourself, go ahead--work 90 hour weeks between your job and your future business, hoarding cash until the time that you're ready to go mainstream with it. America loves an entrepreneur, and so do I. But be very, very careful. Whatever cash you think you'll need, double it. You should be terrified to take this step. Get lines of credit set up now, because when the stock market hits the skids, you won't be able to get them.

I was employed through my 20s. Several times they fucked me over. When applying for a job I was once or twice rejected for not having college degree.

I'm still doing what I do, but now I have my own company. Some months it takes only a few hours to earn a month's wage. The customers still fucks us over, but they often come back because they have no choice, and then it's "Yes sir, those changes will take 90 hours of work." // Changes 2 lines of code and goes to issue an invoice.

I’ll add my voice to the chorus of others here: I used to be self employed but then got a jobbity job in tech that I like even if I have to keep my mouth shut.

No dealing with customers or billing or accounting, I just show up and argue with people and build amazing shit. Boss gives vague suggestions on work direction and mostly leaves me alone.

$0.5MM a year is not so bad even if they eventually fire me over being a Republican. I save 65% of my pay and could do nothing for a few years.

I would like to interject that the ultimate red pill is not self employment, but financial independence to a degree that eliminates the need for employment.

Self employed entrepreneurs are some of the most stressed out and hopelessly lost men in the nation, because not only do you have to worry about your own financial well being, but the financial well being of any people who work for you.

Those few top tier alpha males, the ones who are truly at the top of the ladder don't work. They don't need to. They have five times more money than they will ever legitimately spend in their entire lifetime and spend their entire life traveling the world spreading their seed as far and wide as they can. They laugh at everyone who works 40 hours a week because they know that beta billy over at the tire shop has little to no value beyond pumping air into the tires of a brand new porsche.

Me, I work a security guard job mostly to have something to do during the week. It generates enough money for me to day trade which is where I get the majority of my cash. Have you ever heard the phrase "Fuck you" money? People with fuck you money, that's the Alpha way. The fucking American dream was built on that one simple phrase: Fuck you. You want to be alpha, you want the American dream with the oversized house, a couple of cars parked out front that start every time, all while owing zero dollars to the fucking vampires at the bank? You need to have the scratch enough to tell people to fuck off. THAT is the goal of the red pill. Two simple words: Fuck you. Boss giving you trouble: Fuck you. Woman out of line: Fuck you. It is the ability to walk away knowing that no harm will come to you. You don't get to have that when you own a business and your entire well-being is tied to that business being successful, and no matter how far you run, it's always just a few steps away. The true alpha doesn't need to work. He already has all he needs.

it all depends really. i don't really do much at my job, and it pays the rent. i'm fortunate enough to be able to do some dorky ass shit that nobody else wants to do. i could lose my job at any point, but my last three jobs have all been like this, so i'm not really worried about it. i'm just dedicating myself to lifting right now.

Did some front-end web dev study.

Did think of going to nurse school and do freelance (self employed).

I am in national guards of my coutry in europe. Could go to professional sniper school, which would make me relocate and I don’t kinda want that.

Have my bachelors at multimedia, video editing. Worked for 5 years as freelance.

Getting grandfathers house, gonna fix it and rent for two young families and live at basement or parents place.

Dad trying to involve me in to investing web platforms. People lend money to people/businesses.

Another note that can be taken, is investment which can generate Fuck you money in 20 years , for you to retire early and still accumulate wealth.

another quirk of spending less than you earn and avoiding debt is the financial independce that you build yourself in case that the current job is getting metoo'd and you need to find another one.

self-employment is not for everybody, however the financial independce is for everybody.

How does one get there? I'm 21, have my GED and have worked minimum wage jobs my whole life. How does one get started actually making money, building up capitol, a business, getting to financial freedom and the ability to say fuck you. I was thinking doing sales, hoping that it's a doorway into the business world. I know I'm not stupid, but I have no real idea of where to aim.
