This is such a good quote. And not only useful for relationships but also applicable to friendships and family members.

Also, even if they do 'appreciate it'. Do they really? Do they value you and are they thankful for having such an amazing person in their life? Or do they think that you ought to love them this way. Is the bending over backwards expected? And do they criticize you when you're not doing it well enough?

There's a difference between expecting something and being appreciative. Sometimes it's hard to see the difference if you're in the middle of it.

The fact is that men love bitches. They do. The only successful, happy relationships I've ever had are the ones where the man felt lucky to be with me, and where I constantly reminded him of the fact.

I made the mistake as I got older of trying to be nicer, more patient, kinder, and all that happened was I got treated like shit and disrespected. Men don't like feeling like you love them with all your heart and would never leave. It bores them. They take you for granted.

I don't have the energy for the game playing I feel like I need to do to keep a relationship ticking over (I am naturally an open, honest person) so I'm not really dating or looking to date right now because of that, but if/when I do, I will absolutely NOT be honest about how much I like or love the dude.

I could have used this 5 years ago. My ex had completely shut me out. Ignored me when I was struggling after my brother was murdered. Accused me of emotionally cheating with a male friend who was helping me through the trauma, but still refused to be emotionally available to me. I told him I WANTED him to help me through this, but he wasn't. He didn't admit it, just continued ignoring me. But didn't throw the "emotional cheating" accusation again.

I'd say you can't make someone love you period.

There are so many different factors that go into falling in love with someone: there's timing, emotional readiness, mental state, even things like proximity and circumstances and past romantic/sexual history. If someone is not on the same page as you, then they're not going to fall in love with you.

Also bears mentioning that that kind of mirroring doesn't work. We all do it, and it doesn't work — we do things for someone else that we want them to do for us, and then are doubly frustrated when they don't "take the hint" or follow our lead.
