Your complaints can be remedied by keeping to your self and having head phones in.
It's how I tolerate the Monday fuck boy squad that has to get their weekly chest day in, taking turns getting stapled by baby weight.

I'm gonna be honest here: sometimes I worry about those little fellas. I mean sure, if they are stuck, I'm gonna left the bar off them. But if they just straight up drop it, there ain't shit I can do to help.

Everybody has to learn the roll of shame eventually.
[–]MisterRoid8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Lol, what's wrong with lifting too heavy/much and having to roll it off? If anything more guys at the gym should start doing it. Too many are staying in their comfort zone repping on low weights for years.
A girl that saw me do it when I failed a third rep on 230lbs was genuinely impressed when I just rolled it down from my chest to my thighs, lifted it up and put it back. Most of the time I do it when repping to failure on lower weights around 120-140lbs after the heavy lifts, though. I couldn't care less about what others think of it anyways.
[–]virus_ridden5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
There's nothing wrong with it. It's something that everyone should know how to do.
[–]MisterRoid2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Ah, thats good to hear. I don't think that "the roll of shame" is a fair name for that awesome move, but then again, when I was younger, the thought of failing a rep in the benchpress seemed super-embarassing.
[–]silentlyfurious0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
TIL that this was called the roll of shame, I didn't know it had a name.
[–]theaspiringasshole1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Not caring about what others think is liberating.

Does your gym not have a power rack???
[–]MisterRoid0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It does, but I don't like using the power rack. I feel comfortable doing max lifts solo so far, since my 1RM is not that high yet. Hell, even when someone I know is nearby I say that I don't want spotting, because I don't want to risk my lift being ruined if it's one I can just barely pull off.
[–]RavelsBolero0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
That sounds really awful. The idea of getting stuck under a weight that could drop onto your neck or chest scares the shit out of me. I'd rather work out chest with dumbbells or pushups
[–]Talran1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I mean you won't just drop it, if you can lift it off the bar and lower it to your chest you'll be able to roll it off!
[–]MisterRoid1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think that it's probably doable up to 280lbs before I risk breaking something. My 1RM is around 250lbs right now, so I don't think that I have to worry about it just yet. But yeah, if you actually drop it instead of letting it down in a controlled motion it's probably dangerous already at 120lbs or so.
[–]ImTheMVPBRAH 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Just don’t use suicide grip and most of the time you’ll be fine. Of course something random could always happen if you’ve ever seen the gym fail video compilations there’s always someone dropping the bar on themselves even without suicide grip, probably because their wrist fucks up making them lose grip. That’s of course really rare, millions of people bench press every day and we almost never hear about someone dropping a bar on their neck and dying.
I wish I would have known of the roll of shame, since I had to have a near by cardio bunny pull 135lbs off my chest way early on in my training.
Not my proudest moment.
[–]AR96 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Happened to me too. Actually, it was at the very very end of my chest routine. I wanted to squeeze all the potential out of my pecs and decide to do 20 lbs for as many reps as I could in the smith machine. After 15+ reps, I couldn't get it up my chest. A cute blonde helped me get it off my chest. Felt like a little bitch but that pump felt like I came 😘
[–]wheresMYsteakAt-1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
how is the smith machine? I got a friend who raves about it
[–]AR96 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It's cool for beginners. It's better if you use a traditional bench press or do push ups with high reps. When you use a smith machine more than a bench press, you don't work out your stabilizer muscles properly. Same goes if you use SM for squats, shoulder presses or deadlifts
It’s also pretty bad for your shoulders, the bar-path is not natural since it goes straight in a vertical line.
[–]1GroundhogLiberator0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
A few months after I started lifting, I failed a bench press (165lbs) like 10 reps into the set. All of a sudden my shoulder hurt like crazy and I dropped the bar into my chest. Had to get rescued by two nearby guys. Really embarrassing.
In hindsight I should've been doing shorter sets, but I had recently put up 185 for 8 reps and was feeling cocky.
[–]GunsGermsAndSteel7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It's like masturbation- we all have to do it, none of us really want to, and we hate talking about it. It sucks for someone to catch you doing it, and if you do it in the gym people are gonna laugh at you.
[–]1Sir_Distic0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
But Brad Pitt told me that self improvement is masturbation.
So if I combine them I should be ok, right?
[–]GunsGermsAndSteel2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
We will need a field report for this.
[–]theONE8436631 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Anyone stupid enough to bench outside the rack deserves it.
[–]Rudeyyyy1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
My favorite part about that is they do 5 reps of 125 Ibs and all of a sudden they get up and are walking around like they're the next Jay Cutler.
[–]honestlyimeanreally2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Yeah beginners shouldn't be confident in themselves.
Fucking assholes.
[–]Rudeyyyy1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Difference between confidence and cockiness. When I first started I didn't show up to the gym trying to get everyone to look at me. What's the point? You look like a douche. Show up, get your work in and gtfoh. Like you have somewhere to be. Work with a purpose.
You know the ones I'm talking about. These lanky skinny fucks that think it's acceptable to wear muscle tees when They have more fat on their ass then arms. Then they think they can overpower anybody because they did chest one day a week.
[–]honestlyimeanreally0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Alright yeah they suck -- but there's nothing wrong with beginners that are hype about lifting.
What's really wrong is benching in the squat rack.
[–]Rudeyyyy0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh no they wanna get hyped fine by me but don't be douche about it.
And people actually bench on the squat rack? I thought that was a myth I've never seen it in person lmfao.
[–]ImTheMVPBRAH 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Haha, they’re actually really funny. On my Wednesday workout there’s always this skinny guy doing the chest press machine with bitchweight grunting loud as fuck(borderline screaming) on purpose for attention. Never increases weight either, would help him but people like that rarely lift for the results and will most likely just get angry about my unsolicited advice.
Those are what I like to call Show Lifters. People that go to the gym to make it look like they're working out when they actually aren't and are making this sad attempt at getting some 9 to look at them while they bench the same 25 pound weights every week. They like to show up, make noises like they're giving birth when they lift light weight, try to follow the hottest chick in the gym around and get her to notice him as he's doing full speed on the treadmill (no joke I actually saw that once. Dude was full on sprinting and the woman was just slightly jogging minding her own business) and then make some sad beta attempt at trying to talk to her when she has her headphones in. Worst kinds of people.
Only people worse then them are those people that go to the gym and get on a machine only to be on their phone the whole time. True story, was waiting for the leg press to be open. Kept my eye on the guy who was in it the whole time. Put the weight on the rack, sat down and for about 10 minutes just scrolled through his phone, didn't even do one rep, got up and went to another machine. I was baffled.
[–]TheSanctified0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't really use a barbell press and just use dumbbells for my chest workout. Am I missing anything? Is it more dangerous?
[–]MonTrenA1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Nothing wrong with dumbbells, besides potentially out growing them. My gym only has them up to 100lbs, but since my barbell bench is closing in on 4 plates they have been mostly used for hypertrophy bench work, as opposed to strength.
[–]Swole_is_life 17 points18 points19 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I feel like someone saying "fuck you guys for convincing me I need to be a better man" means we're doing it right.
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
To each their own. The "bro" culture is probably the only social life I have after coming back to the World.
[–]enjoyit72 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If the world goes to shit I know I can rely on 2 things. My ability to lift heavy shit and the comrodary of men who will help me lift heavier shit and chase skirts.
[–]GunsGermsAndSteel11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't get into that whole bro culture either. I talk to maybe 2 or 3 people in my gym, and even them, it's rare. I'm not there to get chicks. In fact I don't even lift to attract women. I lift because it's genuinely important to me to be strong. It makes life so much easier.
At this point in my life (42years old), I'm not doing jack shit to impress anybody, male or female. If I wanna lift, I'll lift. If someday I wanna stop, I'll stop. What people think of it or say about it is of no consequence.
Current lifts: 455 squat/300 bench/515 deadlift. Not bad for an old fart I guess.
[–]gmflag0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Honestly, you are way ahead of the curve for the vast majority of men, not just the men of your age. Still maintaining the thousand pound club at that age is amazing. In all seriousness, you will thank yourself for continuing to do so when you hit your 70s and 80s. Many of the gero patients i see that are still functioning and enjoying life were the ones lifting and being active all their life. The ones having major arthritis or other issues are the ones that didn't exercise or be active, even if they had a good diet.

• Get on Craigslist for a bar and plates.
• Google how to DIY build racks and/or a bench.
• Build a home gym for cheap.
• ???
• Squat butt naked at the crack of dawn to the sound of heavy death metal and summon Cthulu.

LOL this reminds of the 4chan /fit/ post about taking creatine for the first time and ripping the rebar reinforcement from the concrete foundation.

This. Put a 6 station gym in my basement for under $2K from Craigslist. Hog the squat rack all I want, pin some NPP right on the bench, my music 100% of the time.

Just go to a luxery gym or an old person gym those usually don't have bro culture.

or I could go to an old school gym and pat myself on the back for it.

Better now than never with summer coming up my man. I just started working out again too.
[–]yunhaila1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What keeps my going back is the mental calm sustained after lifting. I had mild anxiety and exercise, coupled with meditation, helped me relax tremendously.
[–]ProfoundSavage points points points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Good boy, and make sure you train your fucking legs, god dammit!
[–]Need2LickMuff1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'll lightly pepper my legs; Can't kill them since skateboarding > lifting on my priorities.
[–]ProfoundSavage1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Ey man, that's better than a lot of these guys I see in the gym who don't even touch them. Lol.
[–]ransay32770 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You are welcome! Now get back to the gym.
[–]Oberyn_Reed0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
All of the things you've described are my favorite parts of lifting.
[–]1htbf0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I hate the culture, so I do it at home. I also go to the circus to train with the most flexible girls, once a week.
[–]Cesare_MA points points points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Is it just the lifting culture you hate or the lifting itself? I happen to like both, but the lifting itself much much more. The new program I'm on has me maxing out in each major lift once a week and I love the nerves I get before that max out set.
[–]Need2LickMuff0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Lifting is boring to me but it's the culture that actually makes me stay as far away from it as possible.
I can deal with tediousness, but bros piss me off and make me want to completely destroy any association that I may have with them.
Maybe you're just doing it wrong? I started getting bored so I found a new routine that has me maxing out once a week in every major lift. The nerves I get before that one rep max set is awful and amazing at the same time. It makes me feel alive.
[–]Need2LickMuff0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Nah. All I'm doing regardless of routine is lifting weight up and putting it down a bunch of times. If not for all the benefits of lifting it'd be a write off for me. Variation means nothing to me; I'd rather heelflip an 8 stair.
[–]Cesare_MA1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
For me lifting is 30% self improvement, 20% looking at myself in the mirror, 15% stress relief, 25% fuck you to certain people in my life, and 10% being healthy. Whatever it takes to get in the gym.
I know the feeling, borderline gives me the shits when I'm about to attempt a new pr! Lol.
[–]NotNormal2-1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Focus more on practically of health such as stretching, fascia strength, and structural integration. Having big muscles is worthless and a detriment to health and joints.
Untrue, lifting heavy shit is actually good for your joints, there are tons of studies done on powerlifters lifting more than you will ever get to lift confirming it.
