The first compiler (extremely limited) was built by Alick Glennie when he wrote the first "Autocoder" on Alan Turing's computer (built to Von Neumann concepts, based on George Boole's Boolean Algebra). Turing built the first electrical digital programmable computer. All previous constructs were analog calculators (Babbage's calculator, if it worked, would have done math with embedded logarithmic lookups - a calculator - not a computer).

FORTRAN was developed by Backus's group in 1954, two years later than the A-0 compiler by Hopper's team. An optimizing version that was commercially available came around in 1957.
Thank you for introducing Autocode and Alick Glennie to me, though - I hadn't heard about that before. I'll have to do some reading. Looks like it was developed right around the same time as Hopper's A-0 compiler.
I always love how these concepts somehow just spread like wildfire right about the same time. Part of it is due to cross-pollination between research groups, but much of it is because conditions are suddenly ripe for a new idea to suddenly prosper.
