You can easily practice capital punishment and more strict law far more cheaply than in the West. The problem with that is that the vast majority of countries doing so are utter shitholes. I do believe it reasonable to argue that law is the most fundamental formal driver of social contract. If and how much you punish people for acts is going to set the tone of your society.
The problem domain is simple: how should you deal with members of your society that seriously break social contract? Teaching people a lesson and demonstrating that social contract can be relied on because it is actively defended is a cornerstone of a strong society. I will gladly pay money to ensure that I get to live in a society that has clear rules. That's what paying for imprisonment is for.

I certainly don’t think they’re bad people, but their job is not to protect and serve.
My friend and I both had our houses robbed in the last 7 years. Both in low crime upper middle class neighborhoods. It took the cops over 90 minutes to even come to my house. When they did they didn’t gather any evidence, and were generally unhelpful. We told them who did it (wife saw them pull out, contractor from the day before) and I still had to go to the police department on my own time (Monday Wednesday Friday from 8-10 so I had to take off work) to get charges pressed. While he did end up getting convicted the police were disinterested in Pershing a real crime the entire time.
My friends story was even worse and they never caught his. They essentially white him a report for insurance and that was it. He turned on his iPad tracking device and screenshoted the location and called them and told them and they said they would look into it and didn’t.
A cops job revolves around revenue collection.
I get they work around the shitest people 80% of the time. I know how that wears on you. But until their focus is fundamentally shifted off victimless crime and more to real crime and serving the community I want nothing to do with them.

On the most basic level, I have sympathy for accidentally walking into someone else's home and being startled to find someone there. Startled I understand. Drawing a gun I understand.

If I enter the wrong apartment, I would pick up on it immediately, on the smallest details. I would bump into something right away, or realize there is something that does not belong to me. I have entered a wrong apartment before actually, when I was at a friend's place, for example, and it never took me more than a split second to realize it, usually with immediate embarrassment.
There is something incredibly fishy about this. I really, really want to know if they had some past history and she was out for some revenge. If they had any past personal involvement at all, I would immediately start digging further in that direction. This might well be a case of a woman scorned and the fallout from it, some vindictive bullshit.
I am not buying a word she says. I would rather bet she tried to kill him. Wasn't there some woman who set the house on fire because she was asked to turn the music down? If he lived RIGHT ABOVE HER, did she maybe feel annoyed by noise? Have there been any noise complaints from her about him?
Either way, this story stinks to heavens and I really think there is more to it. Someone does not spend anything more than a few seconds in an apartment that is not theirs, even if it had the EXACT SAME layout as the one below. Did it, BTW? Did it have the same layout? I’m almost reticent to say it given the hate all got redirected at you, but I’m with you here. We like to hand out really hard sentences willy-nilly. Even just 10 years i think would be fine. This was characterized primarily by carelessness coupled with a shoot-first attitude.
10 years fundamentally changes her entire life. The conviction stays with her career until she dies, and any semblance of a normal life for her is done. Her conviction already guarantees a life sentence, even if only part of it is incarceration.

I am completely with you on the manslaughter point, this certainly does not meet that definition. Same on the Castle Doctrine, agree completely with your assessment on the inapplicability of that in this case and the court was right to disallow it to the jury.
But the law in Texas also gives a massive amount of leeway in sentencing post-conviction; from 5 years to essentially life. I just tend to think that a decade in prison for this specific crime is the right amount. But my primary bias on this topic, as I mentioned in my first comment, is that sentences in general tend to be far too long in my opinion.
And I suspect we would very strongly agree across the board on this last point when it comes to nonviolent and particularly narcotics offenders.

Reckless indiference is for doing something you KNOW might result in the death of another, and it does cause death, like drunk driving and you kill someone.
Same apartment, wrong floor. Thats an accident. If there hadnt been any shots fired, would she have been charged with BnE? Almost 100% not. So the felony murder exemption doesnt apply, and I might add, they didnt charge her with felony murder.
Again, this was manslaughter at worst, and if the victim had been WHITE, thats all she would have gotten. We all know it. A term of 5-10 is 100% appropriate given the circumstances and her clean record.
