I've been debating whether or not to post this for a long time mostly out of embarrassment and shame. Shame and embarrassment over being conflicted about something that others may think is obvious. But after several days I still don't know what the right answer is and I really need you queens to give me advice or slap some sense into me.
I need to provide some context about myself. I'm an active duty military officer who is attending a top 10 law school (not bragging at all, just specifying to make a point about my ex and his career choice) after being accepted into a military program. So I'm getting paid my usual salary, the housing allowance for the area I'm at (I live in a high cost living area), and my school is paid for by the military.
I recently broke up with my fiance (we live in different states due to being stationed in different places) about a week ago because he was leaving the military with no job lined up. I begged him to stay in for just a couple more months because the job situation is absolutely terrible and he refused because he was absolutely sick and tired of the military. As far as I'm concerned he did not have any PTSD (he deployed to afghanistan about a year ago and came back this Nov.) I was really put off by this, everyone's working at home from now so it wouldnt been too easy for him to collect easy money while staying home and trying to find another job or get ready for school. It's not even the lack of jobs that was the ultimate issue. A couple months ago he said he wanted to go to med school which I highly supported and was even willing to help him out financially to do so. Before he could even take the MCATs, he needed to complete 2 years of required coursework for medical school requirements. He then later told me about two weeks ago that he realized this is too complicated (financially demanding and he was afraid he would be investing $ and time and was worried it would be for nothing) and now he doesnt know whether to attend school at all. I then discovered FDS and determined that my fiance has signs of being a LVM.
Before we broke up he was talking about accepting a job at Home Depot to be a warehouse manager in my state about an hour away from where he lived. I honestly told him I dont think thats a good idea because I'm starting to have doubts in our relationship and if he moved here I would feel pressured to stay out of obligation and because I would feel bad that he had to uproot his life for me. Afterwards we decided if I'm having doubts it's for the best that we breakup. The breakup was not bad almost mutual.
Now this is where I need advice in (sorry for long context!)
He texted me yesterday stating that he's probably going to take the Home Depot warehouse manager job near me. He told me this is his decision because he wanted to be financially stable (he couldnt find another job in his current state and so this was the only job available that this recruiting company could find). And that hes not trying to pressure me or have me feel obligated in any way. He said maybe (if I wanted to) see him maybe that would change some of the doubts that I have in him and that maybe our long distance was the root of the issue. I stupidly without thinking told him if he does end up accepting the job in CA I'd want to hang out with him (I am still very much hurt about our breakup and feel a lot of guilt about it).
I'm starting to think I made a mistake and may be in fact helping our breakup become more complicated and painful. But I also want to know maybe I am misguided or being shallow about having reservations about his job selection. If he was still a military officer I would be able to work through our issues and still want to be in a relationship with him. His wanting to be a Home depot warehouse manager is (and I know this may seem shallow) a hangup for me. I grew up in a poor family where we had to live as squatters and couldnt regularly pay electric bills so being financially successive was an number one goal for me and the thought of being poor still traumatizes me. It's not just the income that I'm concerned about (he would potentially make $80-$85k, I currently make $120k), but I expected a spouse to have a profession that matches mine like another military officer, lawyer, or law enforcement. Would you ladies think I am being shallow about this? Is this not being a HVW but rather am I being a bitch and irrational about it?
If it makes a difference at all, he did apply for a a position in federal law enforcement (I dont want to specify where to not spill anymore personal info than I already have) but they're very selective and it's a 9 month selection process before we even know he is accepted and goes into training. Before I broke up with my fiance, I was debating with the idea of just staying with him longer in case he does get selected, but I felt that it was unfair for us both for me to delay a relationship that may not be working just for that reason. But now I find myself debating it.
So tldr; should I not even debate whether to take back my ex and just stay firm with my decision to break up with him or do you ladies think I may have been rash and he does actually have potential to be a HVM?
