I know my boyfriend wants to propose. With a potential recession on the horizon, I don't want him to drop the amount of money he wants to drop on a ring.

I suggested a placeholder and he told me that was kind, but to sleep on it.

I grew up financially insecure and though we are completely fine now, unnecessary luxuries can be an anxiety trigger for me. Because of this, I think I want something small for now and to get my "real" ring later when the economy seems more secure.

It was my idea and suggestion and he didn't enthusiastically scream yes at the idea. I'm wondering what you ladies will think.

UPDATE: After sleeping on it, I'm going to tell him it's his choice. I told him that I want something "practical" and I trust him to decide what that means for him and us at this time.

UPDATE AGAIN: Heard him on the phone with the director of a foodbank I volunteer with. I think he's going to get me something more modest (3 diamonds, but smaller) and give the rest to them. Didn't hear the conversation and not going to ask since he might just be getting me the ring and also donating to them so I don't feel guilty. Either way, I'm letting go and trusting he knows me and my financial morals.
