When I hear "ya know, it doesn't cost anything to smile", I immediately get a nasty attitude and the guy runs from me.

It doesn't cost anything to shut up and mind their own business either. Yet they never do.

I think I'll start using that one. Thanks

Grace and Frankie are the best!

YES! I’m 28 and my mom is in her 50s, and it’s our mutual favorite show. I love that they depict the later stages of a woman’s life in such an upbeat, fashionable, and refreshing way (compared to the usual tired grandma media stereotype). Long live Grace and Frankie!

Yes!! I’m 32, my mom is 65 and we have watched every season together. Such a great show for all the reasons you stated. They are kick ass women for sure!

I decided to stop obliging this week. My come to Jesus moment occurred when the gate guard at work held my ID while telling me to smile, then kept yanking it out of reach like it was funny. His coworker even started chuckling. I was just irritated and starting to get angry.
Holy hell, how about you let me go on about my day and fuck off?
[–]muludnepgnicnadFDS Newbie50 points51 points52 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I got pissed off just reading this
[–]TheWarmestHugzFDS Newbie53 points54 points55 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Jesus christ, it’s legitimately infuriating when men do this. Winding us up like this is not cute or funny, it’s just a good way to get us to dislike you even more.

Tell him you will just wait for HR to get it for you. Then he can explain why he wouldn't give it back. Bet he stops doing that at least to you. Its also possible to file a complaint with hr. If you type up, print out ( not at work, email to an office depot or something if you don't have a printer) then mail it care of hr. That way its completely anonymous. Assuming there are lots of employees you can pretend you have no idea.
Or a throwaway email. Or you could file a report in person, but that depends on the atmosphere of your company.

I actually don't need anonymity; I can file an informal written complaint (there are boxes for that all over campus) or, if I wanted to really make things move, I could do it in person. We're a federal agency so we have an entire investigative office.
My assumption is that he never thought what he was doing was wrong OR he doesn't imagine I would report him.
Edit: He hasn't done it again (it was last week) but in the off chance he does, I'll be writing down his badge number.

Oh I hate that. In my younger days I worked in a big city and men would admonish me to “Smile!” all the time. It may sound harmless, but it’s just another way they feel entitled to harass women. Pretty sure they never yell SMILE at men passing by...
We don’t owe men a smile. Or beauty, or conversation, or gratitude that they chose to acknowledge us.

When I was in high school one of the staff said it to me, when I was walking between classes. Of course he acted like he had no idea what was wrong with it when I called him out on it. It was just so shocking, because it wasn’t just a grown man saying that to a young teenager, it was a grown man saying it to a young teenager under his care. Yuck.
I’d like to think that in that case, it wasn’t necessarily sexual, like when old ladies say it to girls or younger women, but it’s still indicative of the societal pressure to be positive and attractive all the time.

I’ve never had a woman tell me to smile. Countless men have, though. And never once has it worked.
[–]Krista828FDS Newbie7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I have had women tell me to smile. I have always been offended, male or female.
[–]JoyJonesIIIFDS Newbie6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Why would you even say that to someone? I get that in certain circumstances you might say that playfully in conversation, but to just shout it out?
[–]huevos_and_whiskeyFDS Newbie11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Power and control, entitlement. You’ve really never had some local busybody try to dictate the minutiae of your life and everyone else’s for no reason other than their own petty little ego?
[–]JoyJonesIIIFDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh, I knew why. It was just a rhetorical question, lol.
[–]lemur00FDS Newbie3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Women will totally do the opposite though. I've had many women ask WHY ARE YOU SMILING. I have resting happy face 😂
[–]JoyJonesIIIFDS Newbie4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Are you actually happy? At least they're not telling you to quit smiling (I hope).
[–]lemur00FDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh they totally are. Like the person who asks "what are YOU looking at", the command to stop is implied in the question itself.
I am happy a decent amount of time but my neutral face is a smile. The corners of my mouth are naturally upturned and I have rounded "happy" cheeks. It's just how I look.
Eta: I'll add that it seems like most women who do this seem to think I'm laughing or smirking at them.

I had the school fucking principal tell me to smile. 🙄
[–]SupaDollFDS Newbie39 points40 points41 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
There's an episode of Broad City where this exact thing happens so Ilana puts up her two middle fingers and forces them into the corners of her mouth to pull them up into a smile. Definitely doing that next time.

I always found that no reaction was best, not even a glance in their direction. They WANT a response, so give them nothing. At least they look stupid shouting at a woman who doesn’t even give them the time of day.

I also like the Kristen Bell putting on lipstick move.

Way, way less pathetic than being butthurt that women don't like to be told "Hey! Look prettier for no reason. How you actually feel doesn't matter because this is what I want to see."
[–]Struggleis4realFDS Newbie32 points33 points34 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Haha this reminds me of a time I was asked to smile at work. And I told him I’m not getting paid to smile.
[–]MuldersFoxFDS Newbie48 points49 points50 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
During my engineering thesis/capstone, one of the heads of the department asked why I wasn’t smiling. I was one of the last people to go and literally none of the guys before me was asked that. I was floored.

If you smile they will think it means you want to be bothered... then they go all “nice guy” and flip out because, no a smile doesnt meant I wanna go on a fucking date. I actually had to teach myself to have a resting bitch face so they stay away. It works :)

“Smiling doesn’t win you gold medals.”
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Maybe we can smile a psycho smile and not stop staring at them until they leave the room, if they get in their car, stare at them through the window with your psycho smile. Then find them on social media and send a friend request, tell them you couldn't stop thinking about them. Out creep these creeps! 😈
[–]glj901FDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
This is so great! I’m doing this. I’m gonna psycho smile next time and just stand there staring at them like a psychopath. Hopefully I’ll give them nightmares for life.

I'm to the point where I'll snarl and foam at the mouth because oh lucky me to have been chosen by some random dude who deems I must please him because he has entered my space. The audacity 😒
[–]Supringsinglyawesome0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
.. okay I’ve never understood, seriously, can y’all tell me what’s wrong with this? I legit just don’t understand.
