I don’t know if I agree that it’s “ok to be lesbian” in society. It’s more like lesbians have been so pornified and the only ones “accepted” are the fake male fantasy “lesbians”. But obviously that’s just male fantasy and so real-life lesbians face plenty of discrimination.

Then you’ve got the phenomenon of compulsory heterosexuality which I’m no expert on but from what I gather it’s that women are so socialized to cater to men and deny their own sexuality that even young lesbians can get brainwashed into thinking they are straight. It really doesn’t surprise me that lots of women come out older. Add in generational differences in attitudes toward gay/lesbian acceptance and religious upbringing and you’ve got the perfect recipe for closeted (without even realizing) lesbians.

My humanities professor, made it a point to let us know the older women get, the more chances they have of being attracted to other women. She even made it a question on the final.

Wanted to share this becauee I've noticed that usually anything related to the LGBT+ community, the focus is on men- not women. Though in society, it is deemed ok for women to be lesbian and looked down upon for men to be gay. A lot of men "fear" being labeled gay yet the majorty of those strictly in the gay community (identifying as gay or lesbian) and not bisexual ARE men.

The majorty of lesbians are older. Ive known some women who married abusive men and are now with women. So I'm just curious what % of women who identify as lesbian in their elder years previously labeled themselves straight.

Just food for thought.

Great post, but I just wanted to mention something. A lot of lesbians in the media today that are deemed acceptable are femme women that seem to conform to traditional views of femininity. All lesbians face discrimination, but butch women specifically are more likely to be targets of slurs and physical abuse. Our society still does not value women/women relationships with the same respect that they do man/woman or man/man ones. I believe this is to do mostly with misogyny, and the belief that unless a woman marries a man she's just "playing house" with another woman. Just food for thought, thanks.
