If you ever want to nip that in the bud, call their bluff. Just call 911, tell them they're threatening suicide and they'll send someone. Literally every single time. Not only will it end it but it'll likely remove you as a "supply" source because you are no longer giving them the emotional reaction they need or crave.

Source: five years with a Borderline who wasn't diagnosed until the last few months of the relationship...and I didn't know what BPD was until then either.

I had this happen once after I had left him, not only threatened suicide but also told everyone he could in our mutual friend circle at the time that if anything did happen it was my fault. Another friend called his bluff and he didn't do anything - he ended up alienating everyone in the end. I felt terrible at the time but now I see it for what it is, straight up LVM behavior.

The facts that people actually do this is beyond me. Sigh, I don’t understand why one would threaten their partner with such threats just to make them stay. I fell for this before and never again. Taking advantage over someone’s kindness, when you supposedly love them is simply wrong. If something were to to go wrong and the attention seeking becomes the real deal, then it would be a heavy burden on the other person for the rest of their life.
