I view myself as a strong and independent young woman in a very traditional and rural environment. Many of my own hobbies/skills place me right in the middle of this environment and it is not always so kind. I am an avid hunter and I am currently learning how to ice fish. These are skills that have been passed down to me and I am grateful to be able to provide for myself in that aspect. I am also certain there are many women who share similar feelings when it comes to matters as such.

I don't advertise these interests as I don't believe it is anyone's business but my own. You wouldn't believe how threatened guys get when they realize I dare to share the same "masculine" hobbies and god forbid I am at all successful without someone else's help. Let's not forget the fetish of women in camo, ugh.

I am not doing this to look cute or sexy. I am not doing this to impress anyone or seek male approval. I am not doing this to set myself apart from other women. Plain and simple, I do this for myself. This is not a sport, but a matter of respect between myself and nature, almost sacred even. Being out on the lake by myself all day is my peace. Freezing my ass off in a tree stand helps me put food on the table and in the freezer.

But still it's...

Make me a sandwich. Shouldn't you be in the kitchen? Female drivers, eh? Where's your boyfriend? Another dishwasher forgetting her place. Aw, your daddy let's you use his gear? A woman with a sense of humor, eh?

What do you possibly say to these? I'm so sick of hearing them. The moment you quip back a response, you're suddenly "on your period" and "all hot and bothered over nothin". Damn right I'm fired up, what do you expect? I am under no obligation to be nice to you in response to the sexist comments YOU make. You are not funny. This isn't flirting.

Obviously hunting and fishing aren't the only things that warrant this behavior from guys. For me though, this is where it is the most concentrated and frequent.

I'm stuck between ignoring it with the high probability that it continues, and saying something which makes me sound "irrational". The moment guys find they struck this nerve, the more they prey on it. I have no problem telling these people to bugger off or telling them I'll make them a shit sandwich, but most often it is not enough. I'm only 21 years into this life and I'm already exhausted with guys. Anyone else have any good go-to responses or similar experiences?
