Depends what you want from it. Lotta milicucks shilling to go die for president dementia patient in here so I'll play devil's advocate.

Understand that by joining the military you are basically signing up to be the instrument of the state. The same state that divorce rapes you, the same state taxes you half to death so that you can pay to raise someone else's kids, the same state that will make up some war to send you to the middle of nowhere to kill peasants in mud huts so that US pharmaceutical companies can take control of 90% of the worlds opium supply, and the same state that will send 20,000 troops to sit around the capitol building for weeks to install a totally legitimate president in a totally free country. This is what you're signing up to support and potentially die for. It's a morally and philosophically retarded move to make for anyone claiming to be red pilled.

On the flip side the military provides a degree of structure and training that can be beneficial to personal development, it is after all designed to turn literal retards into somewhat combat effective soldiers. Depending on what you want to do you can learn skills that can translate back over into civilian life, or get the government to pay for your college with GI bucks. Just remember you don't need the military to get in shape or develop discipline if that's your goals, that's for cucks that can't figure out how to do it themselves and need to be babysat.

Whatever you choose to do make sure you're getting a good deal, make sure you're thinking about you and not some national propaganda bullshit, make sure you're robbing them of everything you possibly can to benefit yourself. Don't lock yourself into a 10 year contract to fly helicopters, or be a grunt that doesn't develop skills other than learning how to clean a rifle in exchange for the opportunity to die for a corrupt state that in my opinion isn't worth defending.

Been in for almost 2 years now. Currently stationed in Germany. Joined right after high-school, just turned 18 when I went to basic. It definitely has its pros and cons. Personally, I'm not re-enlisting. That said, do the shortest contract; you'll be able to feel it out and you can always re-up or even switch your MOS. Use the benefits to the fullest if you go in and prepare for a completely different world.

I’m doing the same thing this year, personally I’m going with the 3 year contract. Gotta play it safe and make sure I like it before I sign up for 5 or 10 years imo.

There's a big difference in joining the military as a grunt or as an officer. Consider ROTC.

I think it's a great decision. I recently joined the Air Force and ship out next month to basic training. It will help pull your head out of your ass, get you in great physical shape, and also prepare you for a great career if you choose the right job. I don't think you will regret that decision if you choose to make it.

Air Force shortest contract. Navigate to civilian life. Still do drill weekends every so often, full benefits, have college paid for. If I could do it again I would have. People forget the advantage of using your “veteran card” to require employers to interview you in a candidate pool as well.

I joined the Air Force at 18 and am about to get out at the ten-year mark. Joining the military was the best decision I ever made - I don’t know where I would have ended up otherwise. Basically the military helped me grow up, learn important social and life skills, and gave me the discipline and confidence to take my next step in life - which is out of the military. I think you should do it

Smartest decision ever made by yours truly. You can meet great people who think long term and these positive traits will rub off on you. SURROUNDED by alpha males so your bound to pick up a few things from them. Also the men here are generally more fit than the average guy so you feel this internal pressure to be making some type of effort to be more fit and its a good pressure at least in my opinion. Currently I’m deployed and it feels like I’m learning something substantial everyday that I can apply to college, friends and life in general. Personally I don’t plan on re-enlisting but that’s just cuz I’m adamant about my college goals.

As much as I hate it at times, it definitely has its benefits. The biggest one being you have little to no living expenses and still get paid pretty well imo. Yes it’s not much, but really you can save 95% of your income if you are dedicated. You can get out after four years with $70k in your bank account, then go to school using the GI bill which you will get paid anywhere from 1.7k-3k (tax free) depending on where you live. Some places it might be even more. Because you will be a veteran, you now qualify for a VA loan which have better interest rates and require 0% down. Personally, I choose to invest the majority of my military pay and because my job is secure I can take bigger risk with my investment strategy. That same thing can’t be guaranteed with a civilian job. I chose to join the infantry so I don’t have any job skill (on paper), but qualities I have learned so far will definitely transfer over and help me to be successful in the civilian world. You can be having a terrible time out in the middle of nowhere getting yelled at for something stupid and will learn to still make the best of the situation. This is something that can be very beneficial in the future when life gets difficult, which it will inevitably do. It really boils down to what you make of it. You can skate by, trust me a lot of guys do this, not learning any skills or trying to better yourself in anyway or you can make the most of the opportunity you are given and set yourself up in a very good position for the future. My biggest tip would be to live below your means and accumulate as many investments as possible during your time in the service. This can be an absolute game changer by the time you get out or even further down the road. Whatever you chose to do, make the best out of the situation and don’t just complain about how shitty it is all the time. If you’re already one of those people who can’t be self motivated to get better than I’m sorry but the military isn’t going to help you. It may while you’re in basic training because you’re forced to better yourself, but right after you will just revert back to your baseline.

Need to know more about what you want out of the military... job training? College money? Something to get your life back on track? Career/money? Health insurance? Adventure? An escape?

Im an officer and pilot in the national guard (RE: reserves) but I’m AGR (full time/active duty status). There’s a lottttt of benefits joining the military, but to fully exploit them (because trust me, they’ll get their pound of flesh out of you), you need to know your end goals and make a plan. Reserves are not the answer for everybody (one weekend a month which equates to little to no pay and much weaker benefits than active duty service members) but for some it’s the perfect choice pending circumstances and desires

I have not been in the military. I have three close friends, and one acquaintance, that were in the Canadian military, though. They enjoyed it, and I think it made them better men.

That being said, the Canadian military doesn't go to war as often as the Yanks, but I hear the food is better on the northern side

the military sucks in a way that i can’t exactly explain, but it has definitely saved my life. i’m currently halfway through my 6 year contract and i’m using the rest of my time to save as much as i can and come out with a degree.

also, time seems to pass at an alarming rate after basic, it feels like i was there maybe a year ago rather than 3 years ago.

If you’re not sure then just do the 3 year contract for now and renew the contract if you want to stay.

Reserves is good if you want to just do for the reasons you stated (extra cash, staying in shape).

I’d only recommend going full time if you’re going into a field which can be translated into civilian life.

Don’t do it. Go to college, get a STEM degree or even go to trade school and become an HVAC tech. It’s not what you think it is.

Little late on this but I’ve been considering the same exact thing as you. I’m currently finishing through my college and thought about the air national guard or army national guard. I’ve been possibly thinking of even doing active duty now just because I’m getting tired of the whole online format of schooling, so I’m thinking I may just end up finishing through to get my associates and be done with it.

Overall I think you have the right game plan though. I’m not in the military and haven’t set my plans in motion with it quite yet but have a ton of people I know on the military. Overall I would recommend finding an MOS where you learn a useful skill and something you can possibly end up getting a job in on the civilian side. If there’s any word of advice on jobs I’ve heard to avoid in all branches, avoid doing any sort of military police type of jobs. Overall that is what I’ve tended to hear is the most miserable job.
