Can't afford an attorney anymore, been totally financially destroyed already. How do I get an attorney to help if I can't pay?

You can contact the legal aid in your state to see if they have any pro bono attorneys that can assist you. Also contact law schools in your state. They may have a Family Law clinic with student attorneys supervised by an Attorney that can take your case.

Thats why I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I don’t want to end up financially destitute. I will just live in misery albeit with some money

When I lost my job about a year ago, I was able to negotiate to add what I could not afford to the end of term for Alimony. Alimony ended after 60 months, so I could tack the missing amount on the 61st month and so on. It seemed like a huge turdball at the time but it bought me time, streched my budget and allowed me to keep my house and scrape by. Once I got my old job back, 8 months later, by God's grace I ended up owing all of $200. So you should be able to restructure the agreement based on your means to pay. Does youre Ex make more than you? Maybbe If you interview a new lawyer and can appeal to them on the basis of the issue and have him seek attorney fees from her then you might have a chance but I don't know all your issue and I'm not a lawyer. If you have a local church maybe you could reach out and ask for help. You may also be able to qualify for some assistance and see what you can do to make your ends meet...

Someone here already mentioned legal aid in your state, province, or prefecture. Some do pro bono. Others will only help you with the paperwork to represent yourself.
If you have a bit of money, some attorneys will do the paperwork for a small fee. That way you can professionally file your motions or responses while still representing yourself.

I can't stand my wife anymore. Even my therapist said she's never going to change and will always be abusive. She told me to get a divorce.
