It's real in a sense that if you are in China where this is recorded, 99% of the women expect you to pay, they also have a strong knack for picking out the most expensive place they know about, choosing the most expensive items on the menu, and barely touch anything.

Source: expat in China who has pretty much every evening a dinner with client(s)/relations.

Honestly I hate to be this guy, but this isn't so much about her being a woman and trying to use her gender to get preferential treatment. It's just a joke on people who will offer to pay for a meal but don't really mean it.

In China, it's traditional to compete to be the one to pay for the meal. Fights even sometimes break out over it. It's a sign of status, an opportunity to gain face (面子) by being someone not only wealthy enough to afford to pay, but also so magnanimous that they will compete to be the one who pays. Flaunting your wealth and/or privileged status is a big part of Chinese culture.

Paying for a meal can not only a good way to gain face but also to cement guanxi (关系), which basically translates as 'connections'. Buy someone in a high office a nice meal, they may be more predisposed to use their office to benefit you. In China, face and guanxi are pretty much everything.

So it's a little bit about her being a woman, but it's mostly just about her being the kind of person who will play along with the cultural norm of competing to pay, but actually they don't want to pay at all and they're totally posturing.

Also another weird semi-related tidbit: in China, you pay for your own birthday meal and entertainment. How about that. It's pretty lame.

Well I mean, where I'm from if you go out for dinner and drinks to celebrate a friend's birthday, the rest of the group would definitely cover the birthday boy/girl's share of dinner and buy them a few drinks. Like, it's customary for someone not to have to pay for dinner and drinks on their birthday, rather than have to pay for everyone else's dinner and drinks.

I'm not talking about throwing a private birthday party (in which case, yeah you'd pay for that yourself), I mean going out for a meal/drink to celebrate your birthday.

Ah, I see. Well, I'm from Ukraine, and here if you are telling a bunch of buddies "hey let's go have a dinner and drinks cause it's my bday" you'd be the one paying for that. With the assumption that that obligation is mutual (i.e if someone else has a birthday, they do that too).

That concept extends to things like celebrating one's promotion, celebrating the purchase of a car/house etc.

Idk how to properly explain it in English, but it's called "проставляться" (prostavlyatsa), which is a word that can be approximately translated to phrases like "drinks are on me" or "you owe us some drinks", if that word is aimed at someone else.

Funnily enough, that tradition is so essential, that even children are taught about it in school lmao. Whenever somebody in our class had a birthday, it was customary for parents of that kid to buy every kid in class like a juicebox and a cookie/muffin/etc.

That's the beautiful thing about the world we live in, so many different traditions and things to learn about one another! :)

This submission is a good example of how lacking cultural context can totally change the implication of something. But in the end, everything is relative to your own culture. Nobody's doing it right or wrong, just differently.

But I'd still hope that my buddies buy me a drink on my birthday.

That’s not what happened. The man offered to pay in the beginning, but the woman tried to be smart by offering to pay, fully knowing the man would not let her, and that he would insist that he pay. The cashier sees this and tries to take the phone out of her hand and when she didn’t let go, her intentions became clear. All she wanted was her bf/husband to think she offered to pay.
