Woah, slow down there - I dont think anyone should be silenced, for any reason.

The problem is not that they speak, but their voices have outsized power relative to their occupational closeness the problem.

For instance: I would rather hear a judge speak about the law than an actor. I would rather hear a janitor talk about cleaning toilets than an actor. I would rather hear an economist talk about the economy than an actor. I would rather hear an actor talk about acting than anyone who isn't an actor.

The issue is not that an actor can't understand the law, or cleaning toilets, or the economy. The issue is they are experts in acting but are treated as if they are experts in everything simply due to the fact they are famous. Their opinions are treated as gospel instead of opinion. This is less of a denigration of their opinions and more condemnation of our culture that cares what celebrities think.

The issue stems from the fact that fresh produce, especially short shelf life ones like cherries and blueberries, must be packaged the day they're picked. Lots of times growers/packing houses will package them into customer boxes before there is an order, because you don't want to repack sensitive fruit. Some facilities do, but repacking damages the produce further thus reducing shelf life even more.

Cherries for example are picked in the morning, sorted and packed during the day, and are at the airport for airfreight to China by the end of the day. Cherries picked in the US are on Chinese shelves within 2 days.

So you *must* anticipate sales to a certain level, and if your shipment stalls at the port or gets rejected, you lost all your money spent on growing, picking, sorting, packaging, and shipping.

The administration has promised to protect farmers targeted by retaliatory tariffs from China, but produce industry leaders expect business to be affected in short order and Trump has yet to give specifics on how he plans to make growers whole when they start losing sales.

This just causes a snowballing effect. So instead of letting the Chinese buy our products and give us their money, we let the fruit rot at the ports and then the government will make the farmers whole by giving out taxpayer money? This is bad policy.
