What I find disturbing is that yes it is both men and women who are guilty of this, but it mostly always written that it's mostly men being the abusers.

What is even more disturbing is girls / women are brainwashed / taught to be emotionally abusive to men, and boys / men are re-educated again, and again, and again, how to behave not to hurt women.

All boys and men are dangerous / abusers / rapist lying in wait.

It's become socially acceptable, the bias against boys / men, that it's in plain site in society and most people don't even notice.

Guilt and shame are powerful emotions, they are being used against men / boys even when they did nothing wrong.

That’s true. Before I joined Reddit, I’d heard of men’s rights activists, but only from a feminist’s viewpoint. It was ridiculed so much, and they only used mysoginists, hiding behind the MR banner, as examples.

So, this concept sounded really dumb. It wasn’t until I came to see for myself that I realized they were curating a narrative. People are going to have to be more vocal. I get not wanting to join dumb arguments, but if there’s no representation, people aren’t going to know any differently.

Goes to show that finding out about something from an opponents viewpoint is rarely a good idea.

Gotta see it for yourself.

but it mostly always written that it's mostly men being the abusers.

Probably because the women that write these articles are often toxic themselves and these are the types of guys they gravitate toward while assuming the "nice guy" who actually wants to treat her like a lady is a misogynistic shitlord who's trying to trade her gifts and dinners for sex while spreading her legs for the guy who treats her like shit and brings nothing to the table other than maybe physical attractiveness.

[–]dungone 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don’t get how you are describing these women as toxic man-haters who have nothing to offer and then turning around to say that if only they dated “nice guys”, those men would treat them like a real lady. Are you sure about that?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm saying these women don't date nice guys and writing about the dangers of toxic relationships is just them projecting their preference.

Do women waste time writing articles about guys who were decent and just didn't excite them? Nope. Because those guys don't make a lasting impression on these women's minds like chad does.

Look, I understand you are only generalizing about a specific subset of people here, but you are still generalizing. I don't think those types of thought processes are what we want to endorse here, especially when logical analysis of facts disproves most generalizations

I was on the receiving end of an abusive relationship. It was non-reciprocal emotional and occasionally physical abuse. Luckily I had the sense to get out after about 6 months. We were having an argument outside a bar and she punched me hard in the face. Foe the first time I really wanted to hit back, though I knew I'd likely knock her out cold and wind up in jail.

Of note is that I'm a small guy, 5'6", 130 lbs at the time. She was a bit shorter and about 20 pounds lighter, so not a massive gap in physical strength... It took YEARS for me to get my self-confidence and self-worth back. But I did. Sort of.

So yes, men can definitely be victims too.

I have PTSD from my first LTR who cheated on me with her friend's boyfriend and left me for him. She cheated on me multiple times before but gaslighted and denied it every time i called her out to the point where I legitimately thought I might be schizophrenic. A few months after getting dumped I realized a lot more guys go through this type of shit than I thought. I blamed myself for being weak for the longest time. I still do feel I was weak, but now I feel stronger than ever. Just thankful I never knocked her up, got divorce raped, or other unfortunate circumstances men here have dealt with.

[–]kevingrumbles 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah man, my ex wife has borderline personality disorder. She did the cheating, and gaslighting, but also developed severe substance dependency problems along with self harm. Once she tried to stab me through a door, another time I had to drag her unconscious body to the er because she had gotten shit faced and drained out a good portion of her blood on the sidewalk outside.

That shit can totally give you ptsd, I didn't sleep much for almost a year after I decided she wasn't going to gaslight me anymore and left.

Same between my Ex-Wife, and my Ex-GF. My now fiance, she has PTSD because of her Ex-husband. And knows the shit I deal with, and same with me knowing what she deals with, so we know how to deal with each other when one of us get triggered and has an episode.

I have PTSD from my relationship with my mother who was insulting and violent on a regular basis. I didn’t know I have PTSD because of how it’s shown in the media. I only realised how bad I was suffer after reading a sci fi book called Sirens of Titan.

Started with Mom for me. Managed to stay single till 45. Now I'm on the verge of a breakdown at 59.

Yeah it’s hard to get help it’s difficult to share. Best you can do is try to recognise that thought process as it happens and rewrite it. When you are arguing in your head over a specific event in your memory try changing the events by writing over it. E.g when my mother back handed me and busted my nose. I try to see the blood as rainbows and flowers. Instead of the thud that rand through my head I remember it as a honking of a clown car. The funnier and more colourful the better.

It takes work but each and every time it comes into your head don’t push it down and try not to think about it try to soften it. You’ll find your so busy coming up with colours and funnies you don’t go through the same screaming dialogue in your head. It won’t ever go away but it’s a way to cope with it.

I was in an emotionally abusive relationship with a girl for ~10 years. I'm sure a lot of you are asking how that was possible. The simplest answer is I was brought up in a stable family and we stick things out and take care of each other. So I spent nearly a decade trying to make a person happy who was never going to be happy. Also, in public she was very nice and quiet so it was ard to explain to friends and family why I wasn't around as much anymore. Hint: going to see friends or family always resulted in a non nonsensical argument about some perceived slight. The change happened when I realized I have a right to be happy to.

Anyway, I started dating a great girl no long after. It was like a breath of fresh air. No fighting, just fun times. But what was fucked up is that I started having nightmares where it was this new girl screaming at me the way the old girl was. That went on for a few years despite never getting into fights with the new girlfriend (now wife). I still get random triggers. Like I'll see something that triggers a fond memory of the time when I was dating the abusive girl then I'll remember the inevitable fight that took place that evening. And it was never just something simple...just some small thing she claimed I had done which would lead into a cyclic argument about who said something mean to the other person first. Defending myself to her accusations turned into me calling her a liar.

Anyway...PTSD can occur. It gets better with time. Still with me to some extent. This comment alone has given me a lot of anxiety.

Oh my goodness. I thought this was just a normal thing for wives and MIL's. Help me

[–]ggihhpy 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Argument here would be a long drawn out yelling session that would often go on until 4:00 in the AM when I had work the next day. Even if I attempted to just say sorry and accept all blame it was just hours more of her yelling at me for not appeasing her to begin with.

It's not normal. If you think it is then you should ask yourself if you're happy with that and if you deserve that.

[–]Wsing1974 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Awesome. Been in both types of relationships as well. The difference is like having a whole new life. I occasionally still have times when I prepare myself for my current girlfriend to act like my ex, and I'm always relieved when she doesn't. If you've never been in a normal relationship, it almost feels weird.

[–]Malzun 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I used to question how someone could stay with an abuser for long periods of time, and then I ended up with someone I stayed with out of fear of what might happen if she didn't. I was afraid of what she'd do to me, afraid of her threats... Sometimes she'd threaten to kill herself if she broke up, sometimes she'd threaten to tell the police I'd raped her, sometimes she'd threaten to kill ME... How do you leave something like that, knowing that the police WILL take her side, and there's not a god damned thing you can do about it? The worst fucking part of it is the fact that she had raped me, but of course, the response to that was "You're a guy."

Hey guys, want to know the upside to all this? Therapists, psychologists, and other professionals can and will help you.

Yes society at large doesn't seem to care, but the professionals do.

They can help you if you open up.

You might have been through the same hell I've been through, but you can get better like I have.

Once your away from that relationship your next move is to get help.

Don't let her control your life even after you've left.

Society doesn't care but you can still get better.

[–]mwobuddy 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You can get PTSD from ANYTHING. This isn't a revelation.

[–]RobDog101 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I remember when I was taking a psychology class in college the textbook said women are actually more likely to be emotionally abusive. This makes sense considering their propensity for relational aggression in interactions with each other.

[–]Bloody_Rekt_Tim 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Guys, I'm starting to think all this bullshit has reached high tide & things are going to start rolling back out. A new day approaches! I'm starting to see a lot more people question the sanity of the extremist left mentality, and actually expecting some semblance of reality. Even in my real life I've had discussions with a lady who's been all about Feminism amd Women's Rights the last few years in which she admits that things have gone a little too far. Flat out admitting that men do have real differences that provide a vital role in both society and family life that women cannot provide. Shit's changing, friends. Sharpen your tools, men, be prepared to use them for their intended purposes!

Happened to me

[–]ocean_sauce 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be fair though, the article was written from a woman's perspective.

[–]Minoxidil 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i mean to be fair this is true, applies to women AND men, and is called "complex ptsd or cptsd" and is also something that applies to people who have suffered long bouts of harmful situations (like being homeless, being bullied for long periods of time in school, or growing up with an abusive parent[s])

[–]Gambizzle 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I got PTSD from physical and emotional abuse. Fact.

[–]azazelcrowley 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men are 20% more likely to get PTSD from rape, likely in part due to lack of resources (Torture experts note that the speed of getting the person to mental health experts after the event is one of the most important factors in reducing PTSD rates.)

It would not be surprising if PTSD is more common in male rape victims.
