I'm still wondering, why if she was known to have serious mental health problems, the kids were not protected at the time?

Of Course - The Tender Years Doctrine - Mum is best even when she's s certifiable homicidal nut job with a knife in hand.

Well at least one of the fathers was in prision at the time.

At least one of the fathers of the children in question was in prision at the time of the murders. Means he wasn't availible to look after the children.

Your post title runs counter to the professional statement within the article:

Thaiday could spend the rest of her life in the state's mental health institutions.

She is currently being kept at the Park Centre ... psychiatrists told the court she had been slow to respond to treatment and was at high risk of relapsing

A court order means she will be kept in a secure ward at the facility ...

... some people take a lot longer to respond to treatment, if at all," Ms Smyth said. "So it can be anywhere from a couple of years to a lifetime."

Yes, the probability that she is released is greater than 0.0. The likelihood that she remains in custody for life includes a greater probability, imo.

Loving mother, pressure of single motherhood, cannibals, religious extremism, blah blah blah... everything except the mother's being at fault for slaying her children.

the case had now moved to a phase where the focus was on Thaiday's wellbeing.

"The measure of a society is how it best treats its most vulnerable — people with mental illness, they're the most vulnerable," she said.

Fucking ludicrous how desperate this author and the authorities are to absolve her of all responsibility, because she's a woman.

RIP these kids, horrendous the absolute nightmare they must have went through in their final minutes, watching their brothers and sisters murdered and knowing they were next. Heartbreaking.

At the time, i predicted she would do twenty years at the most. Now i doubt it will be even five. I wonder what happens to men who are "schizophrenic" and slaughter multiple children? Something far worse, i would guess. And if she did it because she was schizophrenic, why was it triggered by two of the girls disobeying her by breaking curfew? Sounds more like rage than wanting to protect them from the apocalypse.

Amazingly, Queensland Law Society president Christine Smyth had this to say...

"The measure of a society is how it best treats its most vulnerable — people with mental illness, they're the most vulnerable."

And here i was, thinking it was children who were the most vulnerable.

John Straffen? Lifetime in a securish (he did escape and kill another kid) metal hospital.

Thaiday could easily end up inside for life. It really depends on psychologists think.

Meh, two versus eight. England. Decades ago. Not really comparable.

[+]Poisenedfig points 9 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Nothing will ever be remotely comparable for you will it? Because it's such an anomaly, you're still being a prissy fucking child that the woman isn't dead?

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

LOL! Seriously? This is the best you can do? Back to troll kindy, little man.

[–]ThatNinaGAL 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Lose the scare quotes. Schizophrenia is real. These children should have been removed years ago, and it's not the fault of the crazy person that they were not.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

LOL! Schizophrenia is real? Gee, thanks, i didn't know that. The quotes, of course, are there to cast aspersions on her particular case, you twit.

[–]JebberJabber -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She has not and will not do any time, because she didn't commit a criminal offense.

Since you appear to understand nothing about schizophrenia and know nothing about the case outside of reading a few news articles it is weird that you feel competent to call doubt upon the diagnosis by multiple psychiatrists who have examined her over the last two years.

What happens to men in her position? Good question. Often, exactly the same thing. For criminal liability the question is whether they understood the consequences of their actions. In the case of schizophrenia or a psychotic episode, often they don't.

It would not be surprising if there were a bias toward finding men bad not mad, but I don't have any information on this.

I don't know how you would measure it. Men are much more liable to severe mental illness partly because we don't have a backup for our X chromosome. I think there are other sex-linked reasons too, quite apart from social factors.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fact is, there does not seem to be any history of schizophrenia with this woman until she killed the kids, which is always an alarm bell when it comes to insanity defenses. That's the problem here. Now, if some shrinks come forward and say they have been treating her for a decade, that would be a different matter.

Yes, and i am the one what don't knows about the mental illnesses...

"...the financial and emotional pressure of being a single mum had become insurmountable ...she was a long time cannabis user. "

So she was forced to have 8 kids she couldn't afford or manage to look after?

And it's known that smoking illegal drugs causes schizophrenia:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-126056/How-cannabis-trigger-schizophrenia.html

But hey, according to the International Pussy Pass Regulations, a woman who kills 3 or more kids is guaranteed a GOLD Pussy Pass.

[–]Tedesche 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And it's known that smoking illegal drugs causes schizophrenia:

Can cause things like schizophrenia. You have to have the prerequisite genes that give you the potential to develop the disorder first. Anyone with a history of serious mental illness in their family--particularly in their direct-line ancestors (e.g. mother/father, grandmother/grandfather)--should avoid using all substances, even alcohol. All of them have been known to activate these disorders.

However, for people who don't have those genetic markers, cannabis is one of the safest drugs on the market.

[–]blackxxwolf3 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

deleted What is this?

[–]Tedesche 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The Onion would likely cover the topic more accurately.

[–]ImClow 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

No that is sooo wrong, drugs can't cause schizophrenia, if that were true we'd see a spike in cases. This condition lies dormat for years and is triggered by a high stress event, normally college age students is the breaking point. Also it slowly emerges, first the persons functions start to suffer, social skills dwindle, they become increasingly isolated, eventually loose associations in speech, followed by psychotic hallucinations. Its a scary condition that is heritable.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, the Stress Diathesis hypothesis.

Wait — you mean I shouldn't base my whole life on what I read in the Daily Mail? I think I've been doing this "living" thing wrongly 😉

That scientific research which isn't cited in the article from the shitrag you linked?

I'm just kidding ya:

Ah yes. The latest research from that "shit rag", "Molecular Psychiatry":

"This adds to the substantial evidence base that has previously identified cannabis use to associate with increased risk of schizophrenia, by suggesting that the relationship is causal. Such robust evidence may inform public health messages about cannabis use, especially regarding its potential mental health consequences."

[–]the_unseen_one 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

They're not even trying to pretend to punish her. I don't care if she had a psychotic episode, she still killed eight kids. If she wasn't mentally fit enough to know what she was doing, then she should be locked in a mental hospital until the day she dies. Ideally they should just execute her for what she did.

Those poor kids. Fuck this woman.

[–]ThatNinaGAL 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I agree with you. Lock her up or execute her, if she had an ounce of human decency she would have killed herself as soon as she was properly medicated and realized what had happened. Same with Andrea Yates. Same with every legitimately insane person who kills their children and later receives treatment that makes them sane.

[–]JebberJabber 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She did try to kill herself, she had 35 wounds to her chest including a punctured lung. Lungs are not easy to puncture.

[–]Poisenedfig 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Lock her up or execute her, if she had an ounce of human decency she would have killed herself

Thaiday was on the front verandah with about 35 self-inflicted stab wounds, including to the chest and neck.

You illiterate piece of shit.

[–]ThatNinaGAL 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Dramatic, highly visible self-harm is a frequent feature of a psychotic episode. Just as she she wasn't "responsible" in the legal sense for killing the kids, she doesn't get any credit in my book for hacking away at herself on the verandah. If she had hung herself in her cell after being medicated and regaining the capacity for rational thought, THAT would have been an expression of proper remorse and basic human decency. But no, the bitch is still breathing.

[–]Poisenedfig 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Are you upset that she gets to go free? That she's committed indefinitely instead of sitting in a cell?

And calling the fact that she stabbed herself 35 times, puncturing her lung, just 'highly visible self-harm'? That's pretty fucking tough isn't it champ.

[–]ThatNinaGAL 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm upset that she's still alive. I accept that the state cannot execute her for a crime commited during a psychotic episode, but I wish she'd do the job herself.

None if this is about being "tough," it's about understanding that a person experiencing a psychotic break cannot form intent. Her killing of the children wasn't murder, and her self-harm wasn't attempted suicide. I wish her the best of luck in successfully commiting suicide at the mental hospital.

Zero discussion of this in r/Australia. If it were a male perpetrator, the sub would be flooded.

I'm going to post it. Let's see how quickly it's downvoted.

Edit: The answer is immediately. Immediately downvoted.

I almost hope a man kills 8 kids in Australia now just so everyone can see the hypocrisy in how different it's treated.

If they are mentally unstable, it doesn't matter who you kill or how many you kill, or even how you kill.. .you won't do any time.

[–]JebberJabber 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The question is not mental stability, it is whether they understood the consequences of their actions. Which schizophrenics sometimes don't.

[–]JohnKimbler -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She's indigenous, they are above the law in Australia.

If she were white she might have got psychiatric help earlier.
