“Psychologists tend to think she’s more along the lines of a battered woman. She was being influenced by her boyfriend.”

I just want to choke people sometimes. She raped a 1 and 2 year old. Sure, let's just blame that on a man.

[–]wanked_in_space 22 points23 points24 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Let's pretend he did influence her into doing it. She's still a monster for doing it.

Infants these are infants.

The defence lawyer has a job to do.

[–]civilsaint 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes. A defense lawyer chooses a defense, but doesn't just throw shit at the wall and hope that it sticks.

[–]geniice 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He's not got much to work with has he? Given the level of evidence against her the guilty plea doesn't help him much. Positive character is about the only approach left.

Oh of course the feminist propaganda machine...

“It’s very unusual to have a female charged as a sexual predator — almost unheard of,”

I guess it is also unheard of to put peanut butter on one piece of bread and jelly on another then slap them together.

“Psychologists tend to think she’s more along the lines of a battered woman. She was being influenced by her boyfriend.”

"Women aren't capable of doing anything terrible of their own free will, this must have happened because of a man"

[–]geniice 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Oh of course the feminist propaganda machine...

No its the defence lawyer doing their job. Right to assistance of counsel and all that.

[–]Drippyskippy 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

True. However, if I ever needed a lawyer I wouldn't want them to say untrue things even if it were an attempt to defend me. In the end his statements really do play off of the feminist propaganda machine. Mainstream media continues the narrative that women aren't violent and can do no harm (men are the violent ones). He is continuing that narrative regardless if he is a lawyer or not.

[–]MyPaynis 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would want them to say just about anything to get me off or a lower punishment. The problem isn't the attorney the problem is that this line of reasoning is a society norm pushed by feminist.

If you were guilty you might.

“If you’d meet her and talk to her, she’s a very engaging and charming young lady,” Wightman said. “Really, her personality doesn’t fit any of the things she’s charged with.”

As a psychologist... This makes it worse for them to be defending her. If she truly was a compassionate person, and her personality didn't fit with the crime... She would be a shell of her former self. She would be so devastated that she allowed herself to be manipulated, and used in this way, that she would undoubtedly be troubled.

The fact that she seems normal, means that she most likely enjoyed it, and at the very least, doesn't feel any remorse for doing it.

So you think we should withdraw the right to assistance of counsel in rape cases?

[–]Daemonicus 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I think counsel should be honest, and not lie. There's a difference between providing a reasonable defence, and flat out fabrication, or misdirection.

[–]geniice 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Lie? Are you accusing the lawyer of lying? A criminal defence lawyer isn't about to start lying for their client. Trying to put their client in the best possible light yes but lying is a different matter entirely.

[–]Daemonicus 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Isn't it a lie to propose that her being "pleasant" afterwards is somehow deserving of a lesser sentence?

And yes, I'm accusing a lawyer of lying. Do you seriously think they don't lie?

[–]geniice 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Isn't it a lie to propose that her being "pleasant" afterwards is somehow deserving of a lesser sentence?

No. The lawyer can argue that pretty much anything is deserving of a lesser sentence. If it is or not is a matter for the judge.

And yes, I'm accusing a lawyer of lying. Do you seriously think they don't lie?

For just another client in another day at the office? No. Criminal defence lawyers defend a lot of people. They pretty quickly end up going through the motions (because you can't afford to get attached to any one case) which don't include lying.

[–]Daemonicus 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No. The lawyer can argue that pretty much anything is deserving of a lesser sentence. If it is or not is a matter for the judge.

Yes they can. Doesn't mean they should. Which brings us back to my original statement.

For just another client in another day at the office? No. Criminal defence lawyers defend a lot of people. They pretty quickly end up going through the motions (because you can't afford to get attached to any one case) which don't include lying.

They want to win. Whatever it takes to win, is what matters. Not the clients, not the law, not morality.

I'm not saying that they would get attached to the clients and want to save them. They want to win, to advance their reputation, and thus, their career.

She probably is a charming young lady -- let's not forget that being charming is one common characteristic of the textbook psychopath.

[–]angry_cabbie -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

*Sociopath.

[–]ThirdTurnip 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Psychopath works just fine. They're just different common usage terms for people with anti-social personality disorder.

Though sociopath sounds less horrible so I'm sure she and her lawyer would prefer that label if given a choice between the two.

[–]angry_cabbie -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

There's enough differences between the two to necessitate separate labels (impulsive vs. calculated, for example). But I've been out of my head lately, and I believe I had it backwards.

[–]ThirdTurnip 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have a psych degree and double checked before responding to make sure nothing had changed.

Neither term has clinical meaning. You might find a few websites trying to claim there are differences between them but they are essentially speaking out of their arses.

[–]Daemonicus 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're wrong.

[–]kingjoey52a 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Of course her lawyer is going to say something like this, its her lawyer's job to get her off the hook. Her lawyer isn't going to say she's an evil rapist, that would be career suicide

[–]Vandechoz 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I'm really tired of people bringing up what a defense lawyer says about their client as if it means anything.

[–]Sabz5150 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

as if it means anything.

If a lawyer called his male client a "charming guy" in the face of raping toddlers, the Twittertumblrs would be making him new shoes out of public opinion concrete.

[–]geniice 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Good chance it wouldn't be reported. You ever gone to watch a court case? Defence lawyers do this day in day out.

[–]ber_throwaway 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is so fucking disgusting. Toddlers. WTF.

And these cases are just the tip of the iceberg. Because a disturbing amount of people think that women don't do shit like that.

Unlucky for her she isn't good looking. If she were, she had a very high chance to get of the hook and get her boyfriend in trouble instead..

[–]MRA-automatron-2kb 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because a disturbing amount of people think that women don't do shit like that.

That is what I find depressing and frustrating.

[–]scramtek 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ted Bundy was pretty charming by all accounts.

[–]enslavedbyvegetables 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They should send this sow to ISIS, let them have at her.

[–]ETF_Ross101 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Guys, she clearly did not intent to rape the toddler. Any reasonable person would forgive her /s

[–]AVAtistar 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yse. Psicopats are usually "charming". They use it to get you.

[–]JonSnowsGhost 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Her defense lawyer is trying to paint her in a better light in hopes of a better trial or sentencing outcome? How shocking.
In actuality, the article is useful for pointing out the obviousness of female privilege in media/courtrooms.

There’s no disputing that Heather Koon videotaped herself raping four children in an Elyria, Ohio, day care before sending the footage to her boyfriend, a convicted sex offender.
What is up for debate, Wightman said, is whether Koon should be considered a violent sexual offender.

There probably wouldn't be a "debate" on whether or not a man is a violent sexual offender, if he did the same thing, assuming a man would even be able to work at a day care for a significant period of time.

[–]geniice 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Poor phrasing. A better description would be "what the judge has yet to decide".

[–]ABC_Florida 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The job of a lawyer is to protect his/her client. Don't blame the lawyer. Blame those (if) who excuse her, because they believe it's her BF's fault.

[–]TrulyStupidNewb 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Some people who have met Adolf Hitler said he was a charming man.
