Banning 'male' and 'female'? They have lost their minds.

[–]caius_iulius_caesar 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you outlaw everything you can selectively persecute whoever displeases you.

[–]mansplain 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

it's just prescriptive silencing language; malleable propaganda, only emphasize the sex or gender when appropriate for forwarding the narrative, objective truth can wait.

also, defer to "non-white" students, wow, hey lady, what makes you think im "white".

[–]solarpoweredbiscuit 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't get it. What's offensive about that?

[–]badwig 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Impossible to know for sure.

They are just biological terms, it is quite incredible.

[+]intensely_human -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah but so what. If there were a course on creative writing with the rule "you're not allowed to use the letter T", I wouldn't think of that as discriminatory or denying rights or anything. Just work around it, and see where that leads.

[–]badwig 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They can do what they like on tumbler, cisgenderbicurious idiocy, but not in a proper educational establishment.

[–]intensely_human 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why not? As long as it's not some general core requirement, students don't have to take it.

A "proper" educational institution? What does that even mean? Be careful not to become what you despise. Professors put constraints on students all the time. "You must use Microstation." "Your initial draft must be in Spanish." "Your piece should make use of wire cutters." "Your topic must cover a CDC publication from the 1970s." "Your semester project must make use of graphene." and so on.

I don't see how "don't reference sex or gender" is any different.

[–]Apellosine 22 points23 points24 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Students are expected to "defer" to non-white students if they want to do well in the class? What the hell is that supposed to mean?

[–]garglemesh42 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

I think it means "racism against white people isn't real!"

Did I do my tumblr imitation right this time?

[–]bertreapot 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

i think it means you're supposed to accede to their opinions? like if there is a class discussion, non-white students are allowed to talk first, and white students aren't allowed to question their opinions. that's my guess.

there have been other profs saying that women should be allowed to answer questions first as they're discriminated against, so i'm guessing this is along the same lines.

[–]Apellosine 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gotcha and actively disgusting, basically we have been discriminated against in the past so now you will be. This is definitely the way to teach people how to work together on equal footing.

“Women & Popular Culture” class

Honestly, anyone choosing to waste their money on a course like this deserves everything that is coming for them. They should rename it to practical communism.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

even communism wouldn't go this far ...this doesn't unite the worker it pits a dozen whiny superficial minorities against more made-up minorities.

[–]boxsterguy 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ding ding ding! This is a niche class in a useless major that nobody is required to take nor would anybody take it on accident (like I accidentally once took a class about death in literature; turns out it wasn't that bad). If this were for example a required course for all majors, that would be a problem. Instead, this is a "You just wasted your/your parents' money" class, and not something to get riled up about.

[–]Electroverted 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I came here to say that all three of those classes sound like SJW-bait and only exist to add more filler to the Gender Studies prerequisite. I think an average student would hopefully avoid those classes, but then I feel sorry for normal people who have a genuine interest in multiculturalism and are watching it get infected by this.

[–]REB3LxSOUL 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's not communism, since communism in theory is utopia. This is a caliphate.

[–]Peter_Principle_ 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Honestly, anyone choosing to waste their money on a course like this

Of course, the university may (more or less) require taking this course as part of the mandatory set of classes that all universities seem to require of undergraduates.

[–]Drakaris 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hugboxes, fucking hugboxes... They wanna turn these kids into "politically correct" pussies (yes, I said it...).

“Women & Popular Culture”

This has got to be a joke... What the hell is wrong with academia?!? How and why is this shit allowed at universities at all?

Women & Popular Culture Class

Yeesh! Sounds like the kind of class where, if you're a male, you could be Joss Whedon and never get above a B.

“The socio-legal production of migrant illegality works to systematically dehumanize and exploit these brown bodies for their labor,” Fowler continued.

'Brown bodies' isn't a term I'd call non-discriminatory.

The fact remains that an 'illegal alien' is a perfectly acceptable term for aliens, people from another country, that are here illegally. It's not a race issue, you can be from a completely white heritage and still be an illegal alien. If you believe any different you are wrong, there isn't a race connotation to the term; there is only your own preconception of racism.

And 'undocumented migrant' is not a synonym for 'illegal alien', you may very well be documented, you are an illegal alien when your student visa expires and you are documented. I would say the former not the latter has more of a connotation of the race of the person.

This is higher education to outright ban a term that is recognizable and explains exactly what you are talking about is unacceptable. You can't go along and force your values on your student and then pretend you are not.

You can't teach someone anything by stating that you are right, you must prove that you are right. You go to a physics class and use a equation to determine the trajectory of a ball, and then you use forces on a ball to prove that the equation is in fact accurate. It's no different here. You can't fight the observation it is what it is. If you are a person in a country illegally you are in fact an illegal alien, that's all there is to it. What's next? Can't say 'convict' because that imply they are black you better better say 'recently incarcerated person'.

"It is notable that one of the syllabus provisions warns: ‘The subject material of this class is sensitive and controversial. Strive to keep an open mind.’ How are students supposed to approach these sensitive and controversial materials at all, let alone to keep an open mind, if they have to fear that a misconstrued statement, or one that unreasonably offends a classmate will lead to a grade reduction or even removal from class?"

At least the author understand this.

The popsicle the schoolgirls were nursing on during their appearance on the Gong Show was shaped like a glorious phallus. As if they were using fellatio to summon their dearly missed patriarchal figure.

If someone calls me a "man" I feel pressured to live up the ideal notion of an adult. I almost feel like I should be a "real man".

If someone calls me a "boy" I feel like someone who just plays around all day and is a good for nothing with respect to society.

I actually prefer male because that sounds like I'm a human being and there is no prejudement as to how I am or how I should be.

I find male, less offensive than the other terms.

[–]caius_iulius_caesar 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You feel pressured by innocuous words?

I took a gender studies course in undergrad because I wanted to see a feminist perspective. The professor was a staunch feminist that accused me of using my privilege whenever I commented in response to they typical drivel that the women in class spouted. She later stated my low grade was for lack of participation. The only other male in that class stormed out when she called his military experience nothing more than "penis waving bravado."

I talked to her after course and asked her if there were any male issues that she thought needed attention, such as the draft. She agreed there was, but that she wouldn't support it because it wasn't feminism's job to help men at all. MRA since. (FWIW, after law school, she offered to hire me as a professor. As much as I wanted to teach, I would never agree to assist her in spewing more filth upon the world.

It is really too bad college is so expensive. I look very little like my ancestry, so I would love the chance to claim Hispanic in this class just to troll the absolute shit out of them.
