I see, so the world has to revolve around the endlessly complaining women, who expect "equality" to mean that men treat them as pampered princesses AND show them deference.

Fuck that!

[–]Exactly_what_I_think24 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

OK!

I walked into a job first day it was 80F. Clocked in changed into shorts and a T shirt. Came back to my boss sweating starting at me. He printed out the dress code and asked me to sign it. I wrote in "Unless the temp is above 72F" signed it. Took a pick of it and the thermostat.

Men, stand up for yourself.

You can put on a jacket.

I can't take off my shirt unless I want to get fired.

I have often been very cold in offices. I would wear sweaters or jackets. I even had a small heater in my office. It never once occurred to me that I can blame people for my discomfort.

[–]mansplain 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've worked in shops where the only heat in winter is from you welding, I honestly can't believe this office temperature debate is a real thing.

[–]mochacola 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Geez. I know a woman who is constantly feeling cold. She comes to friend's summer BBQ with a jacket. I suggested she try breathable wool base layers that skiers and mountaineers use ( which traps body heat ) so she can lose jacket's bulk/weight. Her friends laughed and said she already wears that at all times. Moral of the story is, if you are cold, use your brain.

[–]Artector42 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Man, if she's that cold it sounds like a medical problem to me

[–]DurdensWrath 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I imagine this is not in the US South. If you were to wear wool and a jacket in the summer, you would soon be dead from the heat

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ideal only for women, huh.

The double-standards is strong with this one.

This has nothing to do with men themselves and more to do with male dress codes in office buildings.

Women shouldn't be demanding the thermostat be touched until they free men of their suits and ties.

[–]tygertiger[S] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

It's the audacity of his statement that gets me, that women should be the default gender that should be catered to, no questions asked. I actually have no problem with finding a happy medium. If men are more comfortable at 22 degrees Celsius and women at 25, then set the thermostat to 23.5 and the uncomfortable people at either extreme can adapt, male or female. The interviewer didn't question Hedge when he made this statement. Why should women be catered to and men forced to adapt?

[–]baserace 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's far easier to warm up than cool down, so the temperature should be set on the low side.

Put on a sweater, drink something hot, wear a light scarf... these can be left in the office and used as necessary.

[–]Tedesche 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I totally agree with you, but just to be fair, I think his logic was that, since men tend to wear heavier clothing in the office (long pants, sleeved shirts, sometimes a suit jacket), we should simply change the dress codes for men and allow them to wear lighter clothing.

Nevermind that you could make the exact opposite argument—women can already wear heavier clothing—via the same logic. He's clearly biased. Gynocentrism FTW.

[–]Dnile1000BC 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

we should simply change the dress codes for men and allow them to wear lighter clothing.

I'm up for this. Turn up the heat and let me wear shorts and T-Shirts.

[–]Tedesche 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not. I sweat a lot, even in light clothing. Sweating is far more of an inconvenience at work than being chilly, and one can always put on more clothing to solve the latter problem. Regardless of gender differences in temperature comfort, I think workplace temperatures should prioritize people who are too hot over those who are too cold, simply because it's more of an issue for workplace productivity.

[–]CastAwayVolleyball 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

We should set the thermostat so that it's ideal for women and then men can adapt their behaviour by wearing different clothing...

I'm not finding that statement in the article. Is it an actual quote, or a paraphrase?

[–]tygertiger[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

As stated in the title, I caught an interview with him on the CBC. The article linked to does not have the video of the interview. If it goes up online, I'll link to it.

[–]CastAwayVolleyball 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah, I understand. Thanks.

[–]Capitalsman 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry but unless a guy owns a $500 suit his workplace cloths will be thick and make him hotter and there is no alternative. The days I'd wear off the rack dress pants I might need a sweater I might be on the verge of sweating, when I'd wear either of my suits I'd be freezing. I've also noticed that just like in school if it's warmer you're more likely to want to sleep than if cold, and women have far more workplace clothing options.

[–]mortykun 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My pet peeve is when the office feels like winter in summer, and then conversely it feels like summer during winter.

Can we all just agree to shiver and sweat when we're suppose too?

[–]ExpendableOne 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So how long until "women-only" offices become a thing now?

[–]yummyluckycharms 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Considering that the cbc doesnt really like to hire males - especially the dreaded white kind - it wont be long.

[–]MonkeyCB 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah, modern feminist problems. Or should I say, rich women problems. Funny how you hear about manspreading or the office being too cold, but very little makes headlines when it comes to vacation cutting. But then again it makes sense. Little girls in the west being sent overseas on "vacation" to be circumcised doesn't affect rich feminists, so they don't really give two shits about it.

[–]johnrover 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The gender issues here are silly.

However, everyone should turn down the AC (and the heat) for energy conservation reasons.

[–]mariox19 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would be very happy to come to work in a Hawaiian shirt, shorts, and sandals—a dress Hawaiian shirt, of course. Alternately, I could wear cutoff sleeves, like the Fonz's cousin, Chachi.

I see women in sleeveless blouses, sandals, and all sorts of "professional" attire, so I think a little parity would be nice.

[–]RedditorJemi 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Different clothing? Man, if this means I get to work in the nude, I'm totally down.

[–]apullin 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Isn't it easier to add layers than to remove them?

I'm not saying that this isn't a problem, but it seems that there is so much rancor and emotion staked on this issue.

[–]Il128 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Most company dress codes give men zero options for not being hot in the office.

[–]DillipFayKick 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What happens in winter?

[–]Joeyjoefro1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

When it gets too hot for comfort and I only have one layer of clothing on, my focus on working will become diminished and my performance will dip.
