Feminist logic:

False rape claims are so rare, because only a handful of women are prosecuted for false rape accusations, while thousands of men are prosecuted for rape!

What they don't say:

Tens of thousands more claims (9 out of 10) are thrown out by police as lacking evidence and never make it to court (even though they don't need evidence to go to court). Perhaps, just perhaps this black hole of un-prosecuted claims contains a large body of unacknowledged false rape accusations, and the 9/10 figure actually supports the idea that up to 90% of rape claims are false.

As much as I want - truly want - to real each and every article on this subject and give each one my fair attention, I knew from the URL that this would be disgusting propaganda. One by one Salon, Slate, The Atlantic, Huffington, and many other forums (for what was once valuable discussion) have become dens of outright misinformation and hatred. I just don't know where these people come from, but I suppose it sells ads.

Rumney (2006) summarized dozens studies on false-rape reports given to the police. Averaging these reports shows that in around 1/3 accusations, no rape took place. Since there is no way to determine, in general, whether a rape took place, there is uncertainty on these numbers. The studies vary wildly in their conclusions, resulting in false report rates from 2% to 90%. Feminists dishonestly round this to 2%, then cite this 'fact' whenever rape is discussed. It 'justifies' the elimination of due process after a rape accusation, in order to avoid inconvenience to women.

Yup. Furthermore, the rate of false complaints of rape to police, though already high, is going to be lower than the rate of false claims of rape to a school administrator, because there are no potential repercussions for a false claim of rape to a school administrator, they can rest assured that they guy gets kicked out of school and "taught a lesson" for not being a "gentleman" or whatever, rather than being thrown in jail yadda yadda. They thin they have a clue on the sheer number of false reports made to school administrators? Think again.

People who make the "false rape claims are extremely rare" claim usually cite the 1996 fbi report as evidence. All that report said was that 8% of reported rape allegations are designated "unfounded" by the police while 53% are designated "cleared" and the remaining 39% are never designated either way. Designating an accusation "cleared" can mean anything from an arrest being made to "the victim's refusal to cooperate with authorities".

It never even makes any claim as to what percentage of rape allegations are true or false. Still, it is rampantly misrepresented as though it does.

The relentlessness with which these kind of articles are published is real starting to fascinate me.

I mean, this kind of boilerplate do-it-in-your-sleep article is not news, offers no new angle or original insight into the issue being talked about and yet the editors still seem to be happy to let it fly.

I'm not suggesting conspiracies or anything like that, but seriously what the fuck are these people doing, keep reprinting what is virtually the same Op-Ed piece very few weeks for what must be going on for several years now?

Hate speech of course but I have to wonder if it isn't anti-productive for the haters. The fact is that psychologically people tend to over estimate the incidence of rare events anyway, so even if they were only 2% it sure as hell wouldn't seem that way to most people.

I don't believe Winston will ever be proved guilty or innocent. I do think the Slate author name-dropped him simply to add context to an opinion piece--but I don't see anything ignorant in an overall sense about the piece. Why would anyone lie about being raped? Seriously... You say no study has been done, then you go on to say what percentages of allegations are true. where did you get YOUR information?

Honestly, rape is humiliating for the victim. Unless serious mental health issues were involved, there would be no reason to bring shame, hate and negativity on yourself. I know people who have been raped, and they are very unlikely to tell people for these reasons and others.

I agree with you guys on some stuff, but seeing posts like this make me understand why there is so much hate for MRAs. Have some compassion, seriously. There are legit issues men face, but saying things like 'a relatively small number of rape claims are definitively rapes' is insulting to men and women who could be victims in the future.
