The court has the discretion to proceed with trial whether or not your have a lawyer. Typically, the court would rather you have a lawyer as pro se defendants make a mess of the trial because they don't know the rules of procedure, the rules of evidence and in most cases the law, which puts the pro se defendant at a disadvantage especially if the other side is represented. But they'll do it if necessary and it doesn't appear the litigant will be able to get a lawyer. There is no constitutional right to have a lawyer in a civil case.

Find an attorney who will do limited representation, hire them to prep and attend trial only. Paying attorneys for false settlements is painfully draining. Besides, they will lose their strategy to drain you, be forced to deal with you directly, and get pushed out of their comfort zone. If they actually want to settle, you’ll just tell them what you want and they’ll either agree or go to trial with the differences.

Most states have statutes that are called Abusive Use of Conflict that can be used when someone uses the court system abusively.

Question, do you understand the path to a trial in your county?

Most of us don’t , so we get stuck in a hamster wheel of motions that never ends.

Every court has a path to trial that you can force. and if you understand it, you can defer most motions the trial to avoid wasting your time and money.

The trial will finalize everything. But if you don’t know how to get to a trial, you’ll be stuck forever

Legal aid will consider the case, provided she hasn’t filed any domestic violence stuff against you. Look up the IL chapter.

Not a surprise. Attorneys want to get paid. You wouldn't work for free. And it's amazing you've made it to your 4th attorney. They all talk to one another, and an attorney has to be pretty desperate to take on a client with a clear history they can't pay.

What is so contentious that your divorce has lasted this long? There obviously isn't much of a marital nest egg to split up if you can't pay attorneys.

But your STBXW has decided that this divorce? That is her "Hill to die on." She's going to wreck herself and you in the process. She's not going to make a settlement until every last dime you both have is gone. She's not going to care that she's destroyed herself, and destroyed you, and on top of that, destroyed the financial future of your kids (if any).

And no lawyer worth their salt is going to "float you through this divorce". Because if you have no money now to pay them? You're not going to have any money post divorce to pay them. If you were a divorce attorney, would you want a client like you? Of course not. You'd never get paid.

I'm sorry, but you don't have a lot of options, other than to plead poverty. Tally up whatever other assets you have? Retirements? House equity? Be prepared to lose that as well.

Bro, been fighting for six+ years here. No end in sight. No answers either. I will fight so my child can see both parents equally. That is my hill to die on. Looking likely.
