I was told by a lawyer that with my current pay (about 2x more than hers.. a little bit more than that).. given that she makes good money (working part time).. I would pay about $1K a month in alimony. Being in California.. there is a formula to figure these things out apparently. 20+ years of marriage, 1 daughter left in HS.. 3 daughters in college (or done).. so only 1 potential child support.. but with a 50/50 option that would be nothing.

So.. I am taking on a 2nd part time contract side job.. to make some extra money.. mostly to pay off some debt and to fix a few things on our house. My thinking is.. if I file.. we will sell the house.. and getting more value for it by fixing things up now should help me out in terms of my 1/2 of what I get back. Thus.. I am making another 30% or so MORE than I usually do.

The question is.. as this is a 2nd part time job.. will this hurt me in terms of what I would owe in alimony? I have to believe it being a 2nd job.. AND that I am using the money to fix/add to our house (mostly) in which SHE would also benefit.. and that I am not nor would sustain 2 jobs for years on end.. that this should NOT affect me. Like.. my understanding is part of the formula for how much alimony to owe.. is based on last 3 years of W2s. If this adds 25% or so to my gross income this year.. will it hurt me eve if I can argue that the majority of it was used to fix up our house?

More so.. if I were to leave in a couple months.... when does the "amount you make" AFTER you leave start to kick in? Meaning.. if I were to leave.. and lets say I file for divorce next year.. unlikely before end of year I would do all this. But I file next year.. when does the stock I accrue at my current job, as well as any money I make STOP affecting the outcome of alimony? Is it ONLY when the divorce is final? Because.. like many guys on here.. I am almost sure my STBXW is going to drag this out as long as possible.. and it would suck if this takes 2 years.. and I had opportunities to make a lot more money.. but had to not because it would all go to my STBXW in alimony. I want to know when can my money be JUST mine. Look.. I realize if I go from 100K to 1 million a year.. she can take me back and claim some of that.. and I talked to a lawyer who in California told me that there are limits/caps to what she could get.. especially after the Divorce AND that she is capable of working full time and making way more than enough money to own a home, car and live on her own. But.. I want to know if I leave in a few months (move out and rent a place.. until divroce is final).. and I pick up some extra work.. but divorce is not yet started or final.. can she come after that too?
