Aw... sweet. When you get a house, you realize how many fookin tools you need. Like fixing a leaking sink.
Try snaking it.
Okay lemme go buy a snake.
Try tightening all the joints.
Okay lemme go get the right size wrench.
Try resealing all the joints.
Okay lemme go buy a 10 gallon jar of sealer when I only need a half cup worth.
Anything you get as a gift that helps you to stop forking over your paycheck to Home Depot is great.

Preach!! I'm currently stalking the after-Christmas sakes at the big box stores to find deals on tool sets to make first-time homebuyer presents for my two girlfriends who are closing on their first homes in early 2021. I'm remodeling my big old dream home & am always happy to loan my bigger tools to women who need them, or go help thrm start their own projects with the knowledge I've gained in this process - but there is something SO satisfying about giving a fellow woman what she needs to fix her own home with her own hands.
Also, while we're talking tools - does anyone know of any kind of Angie's List-type database of female contractors / tradeswomen? I live in a mid-size Midwest town and KNOW there have to be smart handy ladies in my area that I could hire for specific stuff I can't do well myself, but I seriously can't seem to find them. Seems like there would be a desire among women to work with other women on something as intimate as our own homes, right?

I would love the same. Angie's list could just have a filter for certified Minority-owned or certified woman-owned businesses. I mean, they could if they made the decision too.

That would be so, so simple, & so, so helpful! Do you know if there any kind of petition or movement to start this? I'm googling now, but can't find anything to that effect. You'd think it would be so simple.... But no.

I haven't found any, which makes me sad. You might write Angie's list and ask if they could offer it.

Be careful. I heard many years ago that Angie's list was much like the BBB or Yelp where you could just buy your ratings and sink negative reviews. I wouldn't put more stock in it than any other reference site.

I would love to start a business someday hiring and training female plumbers. They would work two at a time for safety and make money hand over fist... ah...

The more I look into this concept of female-owned & operated businesses, the more I realize.... This is a serious opportunity I'm so many ways. Tradeswomen getting more business withoutthe side of sexism? Women hiring contractors they can trust? Growth of small businesses in general (& during a recession to boot?) Y'all are giving me so, so much to consider right now. π

Yeah, go for it! After having my roof redone this year (it's my house in my name so I hire the contractors, not my husband) I got really fascinated with roofing. There are machines now that can raise the super heavy roof tiles to the roof and I keep wondering about female roofing company, if it would be possible. In the past I had my own trade business and did very well, because although there was some sexism, my just having BASIC manners and showing up on time/doing what I said I would do gave me a lot of very loyal customers and referrals until I decided to switch to a different career. That particular 95% male trade is just full of lazy guys who may or may not answer the phone, may or may not show up, might show up drunk, etc. Women should totally invade these careers and grab up all the money from happy customers!

RIGHT?!? I went through five (male) contractors before I found one that I can rely on to show up on time, treat me with basic respect, & invoice me fairly / accurately. Teams of women, on time, on top of it, building a well-deserved great reputation? Honestly, when I think of the friends & family I know who've hired contractors for any kind of reno work.... In most of the cases the work has been lead & initiated by the female homeowner. (Because, you know, we care about having beautiful, safe homes, & we take the initiative to make sure they are.)

I really thought about entering a trade job, but just couldnβt get past all the sexist BS Iβd have to deal with. And since I deal w so much crap from a βco parentβ I canβt handle the extra from a trade school that is male dominant.

My father is the same way - if he sees that I need something he will automatically drop everything & get it for me or fix it. He does the same for my mother. Too bad neither of his sons inherited this trait.

My Dad is the same! I'll text him that there's an issue with x/y/z, won't receive a reply, then when I get home from work he's already fixed it! When I thank him, he just shrugs like "of course I fixed it. It's what I do."
HV dads are the best.

I love to read stories about HV dads as I had the worst experience with that entitled narcissist of a NVM that's my male bio parent, and I'm just so happy for you, it must be beautiful!
I'm totally going to gift myself a toolbox too! I need it and I'm tired to ask to unreliable men if they can fix a thing, being said yes, and then watching them forget or "not having time", and probably being not as precise as I would be.

I love great dads so much. πππ

My dad basically bought or handed me down all of the tools I own. I learned everything I know about fixing shit from that guy. We built a new clutch together when I was 16/17. Then he gets offended that I didnβt ask him to come over and help me install my new garbage disposal and dishwasher.
