"It is easier to put people in chains than to remove them if the chains bring prestige."

Damn. This is exactly what's happening with the current day trend of girls going into sex work/OnlyFans. Women willingly shackling themselves to be degraded objects for the 'prestige' of male attention.

It's a shame Simone was a pick me

Yep. You should not be getting downvotes. De Beauvoir was a brilliant philosopher, she's correct in this quote and in much of her writing... but her relationship with Sartre (who was a mediocre thinker in comparison to her) was peak pickme. Her professional work is foundational to feminism, but her personal life was some Ghislaine Maxwell bullshit. She seduced young female students and pipelined them to his goggle eyed ass, and her diary was full of her obsessing over whether men find her pretty.

Learn from her analysis. But lord don't follow her actual example because she was basically the OG bihet poly unicorn bait. Her and Sartre's repeated exploitation of female students should have resulted in their disgrace and termination, but clearly, times being what they were and French intellectuals being French intellectuals, it didn't.

Simone also thought that mem were better philosophers than women. Her personal life didn't reflect what she wrote about. She did a lot of male pandering. And I'm disgusted by how she sexually preyed on her students. Just deplorable.

I had no idea about this, but come to think of it it's not surprising. I think those 'narcissist' and 'woman in love' sections of the second sex constituted probably the most in depth and articulate account of a pick-me mindset I've ever seen. It'd make sense that she's a pick me, then, because who else would have better access to the layers of self delusion required to chase men so fervently than someone who's been through it herself? It's pretty remarkable how simultaneously self aware someone can be and yet still unable to escape the clutches of patriarchy.

Was she? How so?

[–]Olympia43FDS Newbie 29 points30 points31 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

She lured young women (her students) to engage in sexual relationships with Sartre, who was her partner for twenty years (i think it was this long ? someone corrects me if i'm wrong).

This one is tough to take a definitive stance on. For me, being in the workforce is just as humiliating as being in the home as mommybangmaid. The patriarchy is no where, more prevalent, than in corporate America. I've worked at/with major companies and still, I was made into secretaryworkwifemaid. No autonomy or ability to state my own concerns/preferences. The backlash is implicit. Male and female take part in orchestrating the dominance hierarchy. It's inescapable.

It's a little misplaced to pit women of one class against the other. I guess it's a case of "grass is greener". The textile worker looks up at the housewives as "spoiled/priveliged", yet she is merely an indentured servant. The bourgeoisess looks down on the working woman, and sees a hard-nosed worker.

When in reality, they are both bound. And in both cases, it's the very same man who profits!!

It's a hell of a lot easier to seek other employment than another spouse if you're being mistreated. There's a reason for that: men designed it that way.

[–]scorchedsouIFDS Newbie 71 points72 points73 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Let's be real, workers and housewives work themselves to the bone every day, but the former is an immensely better alternative. I don't even know how you can say they're no different. Being helpless to resist sexual assault, loss of reproductive autonomy, male anger and physical violence in your own home is a hell that isn't comparable to being taken advantage of as a worker. The visceral anxiety and the knowledge that there's no refuge, no safe place no hide from, it's a sobering and humbling experience.

Have you ever seen your father chase your screaming mother around the house?

We're men's slaves either way, sure, our autonomy and self-expression is doomed to be restricted in a world made for men, but the suffering isn't comparable.

In truth, I get where you're coming from, but what I'm talking about is the sort of thing you learn when your pride has been squashed, your sense of safety torn apart and the only thing you truly care about isn't equality, that will never exist, but lessening your pain, and potential danger, as much as possible in an inherently hostile world. Call me a coward if you want, being the prey that's torn to peaces is worse than being the member of a pack that's the lowest on the totem pole.

Euh, I agree to disagree. Take a look over at ANTIWORK and see if the worker has it any better than the housewife. Take a look at MOMS, and see if the SAHM has it any better than the worker. Again, they are "opposite sides of the coin" , but it's a man flicking that coin, nonetheless.

We pick our poison, or the lesser of two evils. And it's just a matter of what a person is willing to endure.

[–]scorchedsouIFDS Newbie 52 points53 points54 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I frequent antiwork, and I stand by what I said. The worst thing that can happen to a woman is getting beaten, raped and murdered, and that's something that's more often than not done by husbands, not employers.

It's interesting that you're comparing a subreddit specifically against exploitation of workers where employees share their worst experiences with what is supposed to be a generic subreddit about housewives and moms. These two are obviously not equivalent.

Like I said, I get where you're coming from. This doesn't change the fact that yours is an opinion one doesn't have when things really go to shit in a domestic violence situation. "Willing to endure"? Ha.

I agree, the original comment comes off as seriously tone deaf and I think you clarified why well.

[–]Emergency-Feed8216FDS Apprentice 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

De Beauvior and Sartre passed teenage girls back and forth as fuck dolls, then mocked the girls brutally in their letters to each other.

When I read Second Sex in high school, I missed the fact that it dripped with contempt and victim-blaming misogyny. And no wonder. She was the quasi Ghislaine Maxwell of her time.

I recently spoke to a former model I know about her near-rape experience with the infamous head of Elite in France. She was in the midst of thinking about and processing how female bookers were actively pimping young girls to these old monsters, knowing full well what went on.

It made me think of ape studies where token females are sometimes brought along on lethal raids (chimpanzee war) if these females displayed willingness to engage in torture and murder for an extra hunk of banana.

Simone de Beauvoir got her hunk of banana in a time when women were barely visible in the intellectual arena. She ripped off a few ears with her teeth and gouged some eyes out to get there like a proper token chimp female. And she got some stuff published. Now it's interesting comparing what she wrote to the memoirs of victims.

[–]ShegoGreenFDS Newbie 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I don't know how much I agree with this because some women genuinely find fulfillment in being homemakers without feeling as though they are, "seduced by the ease of their condition."
