For all the male lurkers, this is what you are supposed to do if you claim: "Not all men".

Absolutely, without a doubt, yes.

I don’t know a lot about Kris Kristofferson, but this struck me as very high value behavior.

And the saddest part about this event is that...she was right. The Pope DID cover up awful sex crimes. When the entire scandal erupted, nobody within the Catholic Church thought to publicly apologise for her unwarranted vilification for speaking the truth.

YEP!
I have a lot of empathy for her. She’s had a lot of mental health battles and deserved better treatment over all. I think her voice is transcendent and she’s one of the loveliest and most ethereal vocalists of our time.

Sinead always spoke truth to power. ✊She was popular during my formative years and I remember the co-called “scandal”. I ended up performing one of her lesser known activist song in a talent show in high school.

Has the church ever paid reparations or instituted meaningful change to their policies? I watched The Keepers two years ago and last I heard, it sounded like the church was still trying to silence victims.

Yep. Recently in my country, many many many graves of children were found at residential schools - where native children would go, be abused mentally, physically, sexually, emotionally and spiritually. They would not allow the children to honour any of their customs, wouldn't allow them to speak their indigenous languages... And so much more. Deaths were due to starvation, drowning, TB, the flu and other preventable and treatable illnesses.
The Canadian government, the Rcmp and the Catholic/Anglican Church are the three most responsible for the treatment and genocide of Canada's first people.
The church/ pope will likely never apologize - imagine what else they'd have to admit they were wrong about if they admit guilt via apology?
I left the church so, so long ago and organized religion - and I will never look back.

I was about to ask if this was Canada. I heard about this a while ago when the news broke. Horrific.
I was raised Catholic and left the church in middle school because I couldn't stand the dogma and no adult could give me a satisfactory answer as to why women couldn't be priests.
This was long before the news came out about the sexual abuse, or I was old enough to know the church's history with colonization, but I already didn't like what I saw. Glad I left when I did, no regrets.

It's very sad. They were just little kids. If the parents refused to have their children taken to school they be fined and/or taken to jail.
no adult could give me a satisfactory answer as to why women couldn't be priests.
I struggled with this one too - why?? It probably has something to do with women being capable of birthing more followers. She can't be a virgin if she's pregnant - that whole immaculate conception story is ridiculous. My boss is French canadian and said that the priest would come around and tell women who already had several kids to have more - "for the church". He told me his grandmother sewed up her nightgown... Imagine having to sew your clothes so your husband doesn't rape you. She had like 15 kids. How do you not see that as rape? (I said "that is very disturbing... That's rape" and he's like "haha noooo it's not like that" ... I mean it seems exactly like that but okay...).
In Ireland something similar happened with "mother and baby homes" - and similar to the residential schools, priests were causing pregnancies in young girls, and often both baby and pregnant child would be killed.
The church is deeply twisted and dangerous. They'll never apologize.

No apologies to her. No apologies to The Chicks. It's always the same bullshit.

This is the second or third story I've heard about him acting this principled and courageous. He sounds like a genuine HVM.

Saw him live on a festival in 2013 and really liked his vibe and music. Got super worried when I saw a post about him on FDS until I read what it was about.

There is a women in my country that was abused on live television by biggest misogynist u will ever see. All she was saying is women's body women's choice and the ugly guy starting abusing her and bodyshaming her. Almost all men in my country United against her and feminism and pickmes just there to support lvms. It was really sickening. If u side with her or feminism they simply label u as bad character so most women just keep mum on these issues.

He wrote a song about her for a 2009 album. I always loved the song and didn’t don’t know this background before.

Even when I was Christian as teen I never liked the pope. All these popes give off creepy vibe.

Sometimes people can do the right thing for the wrong reasons. Sinead was a 26 year old woman, not a “little girl.” She needed backing and support because she was expressing an unpopular opinion, not because she was a little girl who needed the big mens to protect her.

Yeah poor choice of wording on his part. Though to be fair, she was so tiny and young looking at the time. She did seem like a child. But you’re right, words have power.

Yes, I want to give the benefit of the doubt, and do recognize the risk he took, the generational difference etc. As much as I argue that you gotta pick your battles, it’s still worth mentioning that “benevolent sexism” is still sexism, and just felt the need to put voice to that reaction. Anyway, I totally acknowledge he did a Good Thing, and it really does feel his heart was absolutely in the right place.
