I don't know why, but I feel viscerally angry when I think about this.

This is why we've put up with such bullshit for, literally, thousands of years.

I've had exes (back in my PickMe years) who would remind me in subtle, maybe even joking, ways that physically, I wouldn't be able to realistically defend myself. Looking back I realize how actually threatening that was.

Thankfully the tide is turning and men legally can't just get away with physically harming us because they can, but this issue of physical strength is still a scary one and I wish men realized how psychologically difficult just the threat of it can be.

Biologist here ladies: men being generally stronger than woman is technically true. The torque strength of their musculature that comes from innately higher testosterone during key developmental periods (inutero and puberty) is undeniably better than ours. And, as a relatively large, fit woman at 5'10', the idea that a man 5 inches shorter than me and 60 pounds lighter could still overpower me absolutely disappoints me. But, it is what it is. For this reason, it's especially important to meet dates in public places. Additionally, I would never suggest letting a new man in your life drive you anywhere until he has been vetted as a trusted person. While it used to be traditionally seen as polite to have a man pick you up from home and drive you around, I think this step should wait until at least the 4th or 5th date, or whenever you feel sure this person is not going to be a violence threat. And, to that end, I advise immediately dismissing any man who tries to argue with that stance (assuming you agree with me). The men who get offended that you might be concerned for your own safety have absolutely no empathy for the fact that almost any man, regardless of fitness level, is capable of overpowering the average woman. Look at the stats: Females were most likely to be victims of domestic homicides (63.7%) and sex-related homicides (81.7%) "Homicide Trends in the United States, 1980-2008" United States Department of Justice (2010).

Just remember, for women, our physical strength lies in the lower half of our bodies. For men it’s their upper body. I’ve playfully wrestled with ex’s before and noticed that I was able to get some leverage when I used my legs. Also learn weak points on the human body, eyes, groin, side of the body where kidney’s are located, tops of your feet. These are places that you can strike at when someone grabs you but you need to know how to do it effectively, or risk missing your target. Look into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for training, it’s a great sport that teaches you some good self defence moves as well. Not only is it imperative we keep our minds sharp and healthy, it’s just as important to also keep our bodies strong and healthy.

It's a good lesson. I lift heavy and I'm pretty strong for my size. I can still be overpowered by a man. Biology is biology.

Self defense classes are great and all that, but don't let them give you a false sense of security. Your best bet to keep safe is to be hypervigilant, listen to your gut, and quickly get away from men/situations that don't feel right.

This just makes me feel genuinely unsafe. I know how to use knives, and some level of physical self defense. But it's kind of pointless really.

Jiu jitsu is a great sport to learn. It is truly a sport where the tiniest, weakest person can still win. Krav maga is great too. You really learn how to touch the weakest spots of the body to immobilize your opponent

I’ve said this before, but I notice they drop like flies in all of my fitness classes. Doesn’t matter if it’s yoga, Pilates or cross training.

The 75 year old ladies go till the end, but the younger men are always sweaty, out of breath, complaining and dropping out half way through.

Also they usually overestimate how much weight they can lift. The women are more realistic.

That’s why they love the weight section of the gym where nobody is watching or counting their reps.

Obviously this isn’t everybody, but I would say it’s most men.

I wrestled with boys a lot when I was younger and I never won, of course, so this has been clear to me for a while. I guess if I was in a situation where I actually wanted to hurt them I could have gone for the balls, but in that situation, the man could actually hurt me too and we’re back to square one of me losing miserably.

This strength imbalance was recently made very clear to me again when my friend’s 13 year old, rather scrawny son, opened a jar neither of us could.

This is why I love martial arts and being tall. I am not easily overpowered by males who are at least my height or build. This is also why women of all sizes should try to have self defense classes because you get to learn alot of tricks to get away from stronger people fast enough to survive! Its definitely worth a go.
