I googled this article, and MULTIPLE cases popped up of dads killing their kids over video games. That is just so sad 😞

Yeah I couldn’t even find this case because there were too many others like it.

This is such an important lesson for women. Don't move in with a man without marriage and if you have kids, keep them away from your dating life for as long as possible. This is vile.

Lol it doesn't have anything to do with liking video games, it could just as easily be a fishing hobby, a car obsession, drugs, alcohol or gambling, the problem is a dangerous combination of narcissism and addiction. I've played video games since I was a little girl but I've never hurt anyone over them!

[–]SometimesJackaFDS Newbie 65 points66 points67 points 5 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

There’s a difference between playing or enjoying video games occasionally as a hobby and being a gamer. Gamers are more-so an identity reflective of a community and subculture that is frequently harmful to women.

It’s honestly just a safer bet to avoid partners that feel the need to make it overtly clear that gaming is a defining feature of their life.

The gaming community is also more overtly sexist and promulgates misogynistic views more so than many other hobbies.

I say this as someone who likes gaming, watches twitch streamers, etc.

BTW A dude with a fishing hobby — not just a fishing photo but a man who actually does it as a hobby — is more likely going to exhibit higher qualities than a dude with a gaming hobby. Fishing requires dedication, knowledge (the type of fish, type of bait, knowledge of weather patterns), physical shape to walk through nature and carry equipment, the ability to wake up early in the morning, etc.

Obviously don’t date drug addicts and other low value men, but also don’t date gamers.

I think some people have serious addictions to the instant gratification people get when we engage in our most preferred activities (aka our hobbies) - I'm thinking about the dudes who are gonna routinely be out there fishing, rock climbing or playing football with their buds all weekend while their wives are home with the kids, or they'll spend thousands of dollars on car parts when she's spending hours a week couponing for groceries. People need to start calling those what they are, addictions, and stop acting like people (but mainly women) are supposed to just enable and indulge these things because it's "a hobby" and in our society physical, social, adult male hobbies are seen as productive, positive things. (And yes, women get addictions too, but women leaving their families for 10hrs on a Saturday to go crafting with their girlfriends is not a thing you hear about often)

Neglect of your relationship/household/parenting duties is neglect regardless of if it's due to porn addiction, gaming addiction, drug addiction or [insert random "productive" hobby here] addiction.

I have literally never heard of a guy that loves hunting shooting a child because they scared off his deer.

[–]mackenzie013FDS Newbie 15 points16 points17 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Only that there’s been many accidents when the child was shot because the parents loved guns or hunting.

In many cases there’s a lot of debated when and if to bring your child on a hunting trip. Not to mention it’s not even legal everywhere. 🤷🏻‍♀️

[–]imstahPickmeisha™️ 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Lol i mean ok, if we wanna be that literal about it, sure (edit: i guess if we're being literal, kids who haven't been taught what they're doing don't tend to go hunting in the first place). But I'm sure plenty kids got beaten for messing with their stepdad's tackle box or something idk!! I'm just saying, there's having a hobby, and then there's having an addiction/obsession. Having video games as one of your interests = not inherently bad. Playing video games to the exclusion of any other hobbies and to an obsessive degree = bad. But the same can be said of any other hobby, it's just that video games happen to be specifically designed to be addictive and they're such a common thing that everyone comes in contact with them at one point or another (whereas, not everyone might get the chance to go hunt or drive a car on a track, things that come to mind as hobbies that might become obsessions)

Whipping out his video games? Seriously you talk about it like it's porn or something it's not that big of a deal.

Okay, I can understand that if you planned to hang out, cleared time for each other and expected to do something together, and he then just goes and does something by himself, that is weird and not acceptable. That wasn't the scenario I was imagining, but now I get where you were coming from. But then I'm curious, in a situation where you're serious together and living together, how much gaming is acceptable in your opinion?

[–]angrybaija 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

you're serious together and living together

Have you read the handbook or?

anyways to sum up what’s already been said, it’s not the minute details of having a hobby. Gamers, as a collective, have traits that are undesirable to a lot of women here - perceived or actual laziness, lack of ambition, obsessive tendencies over something literally inconsequential (I mean, look at the OP), inability to prioritize, emotional neglect of the real people their lives in favor of ones made of pixels,,,, just generally being stuck in make believe instead of real life like an adult person.

there are thousands of stories of girlfriends/wives/whatever not being able to get their partners attention away from video games, it’s literally a cliche at this point. pickmes on twitter were squawking the other day about how it’s no big deal if the father of their child brings their console to the delivery room, they’re just cool like that 😎 🤪

oh and of the course the deeply entrenched and borderline unparalleled misogyny of the community. Hard pass.

[–]ZirniaisuspirgaisFDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men are more likely to get addicted to those things. Men are just more likely to develop addictions in general. Maybe a goal focused one track mind was good in the past but now it's misused on games and porn and substances.

[–]EveSerpentFDS Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It has everything to do with being a gamer. Video games have a chemical effect on the brain that has the same result as using addictive drugs. Literally no other hobby has this effect.

[–]imstahPickmeisha™️ 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, aside from gambling, I'll concede that. But that's what I'm saying - it's fine as an interest, it's not fine as an addiction. Plenty of people just play a video game when someone else would watch an episode of Big Bang Theory or Game of Thrones or whatever, and then go about their day. What I'm saying is, I personally don't believe just having video games as a hobby is a deal breaker, but a gaming addiction is a giant red flag yeah

[–]duhyaanFDS Newbie 25 points26 points27 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh my goodness.. this is really tragic :(

A Calgary stepfather has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of a three-year-old girl who had interrupted his video game.

Justin Bennett hit Ivy Wick in the head, threw her into a wall and tripped her as she ran away on Sept. 27, 2017. The child died eight days later in hospital of head and brain injuries.

Ivy was the daughter of Helen Wordsworth, who was Bennett's common-law partner at the time.

On Friday, Court of Queen's Bench Justice Blair Nixon ruled the prosecution had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Bennett had the exclusive opportunity to kill Ivy.

Much of the evidence against Bennett came from a Mr. Big operation — a type of police investigation where officers befriend a suspect, bringing him into their fake organization with the goal of eliciting a confession.

The goal is to convince the suspect that police are closing in on an arrest and that if he provides a detailed confession, the head of the group — Mr. Big — will be able to help him cover up the evidence and/or flee the jurisdiction.

Officers "recruited" Bennett, who was nearly homeless at the time, to join their fictitious, quasi-criminal organization, giving him a job, friendship, and showing him a lifestyle he fell in love with.

Bennett did provide a confession to the undercover Mr. Big.

At the time of Ivy's death, Bennett had a video game addiction and on the day of her injuries, Ivy interrupted her stepfather's play.

Bennett told the officer he checked to make sure Wordsworth was still in the shower before he said he "smashed" Ivy in the head.

He said he then "snapped" and threw Ivy against a wall and as the three-year-old ran to her bedroom, Bennett tripped her.

Defence lawyer Allan Fay argued his client had motive to provide a false confession, believing it would keep him in the group he'd come to love. When Bennett testified in his own defence, he said he'd lied during the confession because he "didn't want to lose" the attractive lifestyle or his new friends.

A sentencing hearing will take place at a later date. A second-degree murder conviction comes with a life sentence with no chance of parole for between 10 and 25 years.

Bennett told the officer he checked to make sure Wordsworth was still in the shower before he said he "smashed" Ivy in the head.

He never "just snapped", he fucking planned it. Sick fucking bastard.

This is an example of how being a pick-me can literally be dangerous.

Studies have proven that video games increase aggression. I'm in college and I have yet to meet a guy who games a lot that doesn't yell, gets mad easily, or just has a temper overall. It makes them violent.

RIP to the babygirl.

[–]Terrible-CharityFDS Newbie 12 points13 points14 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Which studies are you referring to?

[–]SolunaJune2 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The true crime podcast "Small Town Dicks" has an episode called The Imposition where a gamer, lazy - no job, loser "father" murdered his 35 day-old baby. The also found the baby was neglected and abused beforehand. The mom was forced back to work and he was abusing the baby while she was gone.

The cops on the podcast pretty much said that the gamer types tend to be the most violent towards children.
