I used to constantly be interrupted by men. And the silly thing was, I would stop what I was saying so they could talk, instead.

One day, I was in a heated discussion with a family member and when he interrupted me, I decided to keep going, anyway, and continue talking over him. He told me to stop interrupting him. ME. Stop interrupting HIM. The king of interrupting.

Something in my mind clicked. I started noticing how other women and I were constantly being interrupted by men and it was seen as okay. But these same men wouldn’t think of doing it to other men.

Now, whenever a woman is talking and a man ignores her and jumps in with his narcissism, I calmly but firmly explain that “she was talking. Wait your turn.” If I am talking and a guy tries interrupting, I just keep going, even when it gets to the point where we are simultaneously talking for a good minute. Until he finally STFU and lets me finish.

I learned basic manners in kindergarten, but I guess “boys will be boys” made it too hard for them to learn alongside us, so I will continue to teach to them like the small child they pretend to be.

Next week: how to keep your hands to yourself.
