Yeah, that was a hard but great read. I would have sworn up and down that my ex husband was never physically abusive but then I got to the part where it was asking, Does he tower over you and intimidate you? Does he hit walls? Throw things? Grab you or stop you from leaving a room? Then you don't have to ask yourself if he'll become physically abusive, he already is.

I had to sit it down and just stare at a wall for awhile after reading that. Yes, he did all those things. I never realized it was physical abuse.

had same experience when I picked it up-wish I'd found it in high school but better late than never. Can you imagine if this was in actual school curriculum?

I've been feeling like this while reading Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, because I need to get beyond my childhood trauma to level up and build my self-worth! It's much easier to avoid or get out of bad relationships when you have confidence in yourself. High five for both of us bettering ourselves with helpful literature and identifying toxic people!

It can be a very hard read. Same with Gift of Fear, with viscerally scary stuff right at the start. But it’s necessary reading IMO.

I haven't read the book yet so take this with a grain of salt, but moving towards these types of discoveries has been liberating and eye opening, to see into the psychology of my dad and step dad is going to be rough, but no matter how brutal it is it is better to know. It is my next book in line, but I have watched hours of youtube on the concepts it covers (not as good ofc, which is why im changing to books/audiobooks).

It is better to realize they were nasty selfish people who took advtange of their privilege as men to hurt those they pretended to care for because it benefited them. Everyone is different but to me personally, realising that the lies they told me about how I am lesser - how I am worthless unless I am useful to a man - realising that this wasn't about me specifically but that this was part of any misogynists repertoire really helped me discard those beliefs completely.

I'm sorry if this is a bit of a rant and not relevant to the books content specifically, but a lifetime of programming doesn't get undone from seeing a couple of girl-power memes. The indoctrination runs deep and you really have to sit down with yourself and examine the BS you've been taught to internalize, and read a LOT more than just this sub.

I guess the really round about point I'm getting to is that it is a bit hard, once you see how you've been played it stings a lot. Better to have it sting than to still be stuck in it though, every painful bit of knowledge that caught me off guard has brought goodness and freedom to me. (End rant lol)

I remember when I first read this book. I reread it multiple times bc of the truth bombs he dropped. The book really opened my eyes bc before I was “blaming” his abuse towards me as a result of him being abused. Never mind I was also abused and worked my entire life not treat people the same way I was treated. It really showed me that abusers know exactly what they are doing. Every time, with every person.
