Can Feminism Evolve?

I think that last slide is the biggest issue feminists have, and the biggest issue a lot of us have with feminism. It's the idea that sticking up for men's issues somehow erases or denies that women have issues too; the other side to this is that feminists will deny that men have issues because of the mistaken belief that it might ignore the issues faced by women.

We need a modern movement which recognises that both have issues, and we support each other. This is why I think movements often described as "feminist" is outdated, because it inherently forces a divide and separation, which leads to animosity, popular myths and conflict...and that helps nobody

The statement on the third slide is good. This is why I take some issue with feminism or calling yourself a feminist. If you are a feminist, you can ask me about my opinion on specific topics, and chances are, we will agree in a lot of things (and disagree on some - depending on what kind of feminist you are). Then you might say, that makes me a feminist. But I don't see a need to put a label on my beliefs that often comes with a certain set of beliefs that I then also should take on, and I can never say that I agree 100% with an entire set of beliefs. The same goes for politics: Most of my beliefs and viewpoints will be left-leaning. But I don't have these opinions because they are left leaning, but because I believe them to be the best and most sustainable for my environment, the world, and myself.

If someone goes around shouting "I am a (insert belief system)" with an attitude that shows that this defines their personality, you can always tell that it will be hard to have a nuanced/differentiated discussion. Although I also think that becoming part of a belief system like feminism often comes from personal negative experiences that lead to insecurities, and a system that already has a group of people that will support you and give seemingly obvious and simple reasons/solutions for your problems is a welcome safe haven. This can be a good thing, but also a bad thing because you might become blind to the fact that the negative experiences of your past may be more complex than you might want to see them, and people of other groups (in this case men) may have negative experiences of their own that should be just as valid.

I'd wish I'm wrong, but I think feminism can't evolve.

There is something missing in the dictionary definition of feminism: they blame men; men are the enemy.

Every feminist theory is based on that idea. They can't stop bashing men because that's what feminism is.

They see men as a class, but why? Rich people are a class because they have money and they can do certain (bad) things with it, but... what do all men have? Nothing.

I believe we need feminism. But we also need it to change.

Because it’s not the issues that feminism stands for that are the problem; for I care equally about the sexual assault, harassment and catcalling of women. I care equally about women’s reproductive rights. I care equally about women who are trodden on at work, or viewed as incompetent, or infantilised.

I care about women too, and these issues matter to me as much as they do any feminist.

The problem is: why does feminism have to so often deny what happens to men?

Why does it have to obscure, hide and erase basic political truths that fall outside of their patriarchal world view?

Why can’t it confront Western boys falling behind in school, why can’t it help change legislation to protect men from rape, why can’t it finally acknowledge domestic violence is not a gendered crime? Why can’t men be seen as valid victims of a sexist society, rather than of themselves?

How can advocates of compassion, often be so cruel?

Personally, I believe we need to detach feminism from the outdated and divisive viewpoints of ‘patriarchy’ and ‘male privilege’, to find a way of actually including men in the conversation and fully understanding the two way street of sexism, its symbiotic relationship, and how it hurts all people.

Because we cannot fully understand female suppression, without also talking about male disposability.We cannot understand violence against women, without looking into the experiences that shape violent men.

We cannot close the pay gap, without giving fathers equal rights and equal paternity leave.

These issues are complex and interconnected, and equations can only be solved from both sides.

Feminism doesn't need to evolve.

People need to stop attributing the behaviour of the few to the many.

Feminism isn't the problem. The problem is people, individual people.

I see it all the time, random woman posts something ridiculous on Twitter in relation to men or women's rights etc, random man read it's, then attributes that thinking to all women. Outrage ensues. Rinse and repeat.

Everybody worried about feminism, come off Twitter, stop watching YouTube videos made by dudes in trucks, give it about 3-4 months, then see if you're still worried.

It's bullshit. Manufactured rage.

So, I just saw the second slide that says: "Having strong, passionate political beliefs is a wonderful thing." That is an empty statement, it means nothing. It just starts right off with meaningless platitude. What is wonderful about strong political beliefs, and which ones, all of them? And we should all agree with this, or is it a given already? When something starts off with a whole sentence saying nothing, I stop wasting my time.
