I think it really boils down to marketing. The feminists who crafted this term couldn't care less about the effects it has on how society thinks about masculinity. If there term were labelled something like "feminine aversion" or "toxic stoicism" or really anything more specific and less inflammatory then I don't think there would be any issues at all.

It's really unfortunate that these women get to sit in their ivory towers deciding the label that men must use to describe themselves. I imagine this would have went differently if there was less divisiveness between the genders.

Weirdly, I agree with the fact that there are rigid expectations of men in society, which is what feminists claim toxic masculinity means. But then I ask them, why don't you call it 'toxic gender norms' or something like that? It's a really confusing use of language that most people would get the wrong idea from reading the word, and think it's saying toxic parts of masculinity.

I also find it ironic that feminists are the ones who talk about the harmful effects of gendered language and somehow are completely fine with toxic masculinity and patriarchy as a term.

Toxic femininity and toxic masculinity are useless umbrella terms. They don't really address anything specific, they just attack people based on their gender.

There are no such thing as Toxic Masculinity. There are toxic behaviours which we should fight against. In fact Masculinity and Feminity are inherently tonic and positive.

both sides are speaking two different languages here

feminists have looked at some behaviours \ ideals that men follow and define the term based on these. so by their definition it does exist and when you start by saying it doesn't all they're going to think is "you don't know what you're talking about"

it's also the same with the term "patriarchy". they've looked at how the world is laid out then defined the word to mean just that. so for them, it automatically exists and to say it doesn't it's like you're saying you think the moon doesn't exist

toxic masculinity is just a framwork with which to view masculinity, to make sense of it. to say "it doesnt exist" is useless since it's just an abstract concept we're dealing with in the first place. Instead you should show why this framework is poor and why a different framework is superior.

I used to think the same. Now I believe there is such a thing as "toxic masculinity", and women absolutely love it.

There is also magnanimous masculinity, and toxic femininity, but this is another issue.
