"Toxic masculinity" is thinly veiled misandry and we should stop using the term.

So remember how /r/misandry was being squatted on by sexists who denied misandry exists?

Just a reminder to those who haven't left. This site wants you to feel hated. They want men to be pushed into further radicalization. For the sake of your own mental well-being. Leave this website.

How feminist shaming tactics needlessly cause lasting sexual repression or guilt in a subset of men most sympathetic to feminist concerns.

Long article for sure, but I am loving it, and loving that deconstruction! The amount of feminists hand-waving away the damage feminism does is incredibly high, and that in and of itself is merely increasing the damage that feminism does.

It's about damn time that feminists start recognizing the problems in their own community. They are incredibly adept at digging out even the slightest most inoccuous thing in every other community, but they seem to have a continent-sized blind spot when it comes to their own movement. Nothing unique there, every group has it, but the systemic wide-spread refusal to even acknowledge that there are issues, and the complete refusal to even do anything at all about any of those issues, is particularly galling. After all, if men aren't actively helping women then they are supporting the patriarchy an are the problem, but apparently that's a one-way argument that doesn't ever apply to feminism or women. Double standards ahoy!

Too bad it's a male feminist whose words don't count. Also, this is from 2015.

Now now male feminist words do count! So long as they're saying the right thing their opinion is perfectly valid! However when they start criticizing feminism that's clearly toxic and fragile masculinity at work so they have to be educated to make sure they don't make that mistake again!

Also, this is from 2015.

Still a useful piece to read, I had no idea it existed.

and if they don't relent, cancelling via an accusation that never has to be proven, and is anonymous, ought to do it.

Eh, just accuse the guy of sexism, misogyny, not checking his male privilege, or just being insensitive and threatening the safe space of women. Don't need to go to full-on false rape allegation, that's the nuclear option. They have plenty of weapons in their arsenal before they have to go that way.

[–]Vandechoz 30 points31 points32 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

it's crazy how even an author as sympathetic as this still supports the racist, sexist idea of "punching up"

[–]bufedad 15 points16 points17 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you can safely punch any group without fear of reprisal, then you are punching from a place of privilege against a group of people who have less privilege.

Well-meant article, but as far as I can see still so wrapped up in the narrative of intersectionalism and '(male) privilege' that a lot of unnecessary discussion is going on about whether Aaronson had the right at all not to feel privileged, and if feminism is to blame at all for his plight, even though the proof for that is more than obvious. I used to think articles like this might be necessary to convince people still believing in intersectional feminism. But if they could be convinced to think differently, much simpler articles and figures should do the job. And otherwise they'll just remain tangled up in useless complexity and intellectual dishonesty.

and its unquestionable that on the sex axis, male privilege exists, is huge, is pervasive, makes it " a man's world", and female privilege doesn't exist, or is at best "ladies night exist"

third-wave feminist theory denies that the social significance of ‘poor transgender Muslim’ is just a conjunction of the significance of ‘poor person’, ‘transgender person’, and ‘Muslim’.

I hadn't heard this. I guess i figured that they wouldn't mean it was just "x plus y plus z", that it would be bigger than the parts (also smaller in some cases?) but i did think it was just the intersection.

Many people intuit that we should have different norms in Europe and the Anglophone world about when it’s OK to belittle white people as a group, versus when it’s OK to belittle black people.

I think they intuit wrong. Possibly there could be different things that belittles different groups, but that doesn't mean it should be more okay to belittle.

I rarely hear anything about those extra, intersectional woes though. Probably because they, in cases like "transgender Muslim", or "gay black man", would be uncomfortable/dangerous for the usual intersectional crowd to discuss and, at the very least, start a discussion about which side in that conflict of identity is higher in the oppression hierarchy and can be criticized.

LOL "it's the patriarchy." Oh, right, we definitely live in a patriarchy. Sure. Uh huh. A patriarchy where the clear majority of college students, voters, and people in safe, well-paying jobs are female, and in which the vast majority of government programs that help one sex help women.

I was looking up a quote from Scott Aaronson and this article came up.

I thought it was a surprisingly insightful view at how intersectionality SHOULD be applied.

Yo this is a lot to read but it's pretty good! We gotta stop acting like some groups don't suffer.

Laury Pennie isn’t just a feminist but one with a lot of currency among the same left that claims to go beyond identity politics and hypocritical pc middle class liberalism. She really could use a debunking.
