Your post seems to be more focused on the shootings that on the blaming of young men. Also, school shootings are not common, they are only a US phenomenon.

Its not an incel problem because inceldom isn't the motivation for the vast majority of cases. The reason everyone thinks it is is because of Elliot Roger, who was motivated by inceldom, and Alek Minassian, who initially claimed it was because of inceldom but then later admitted that it wasn't, and that he just used inceldom to prop himself up. Indeed, if you look at most killings, the shooters are are killing indiscriminately, rather than targeting just "Chads and Staceys".

The root cause is mental illness. As for why its mostly men and not women? All of the worst killers are always going to be mainly men because men are more variant than women are (on average). You'd think the shortest people to ever live would all be female because women are shorter on average, but nope, its mostly men. The same goes for IQ and everything else. Men are less "average", on average. That means the worst psychos will be men, but we must remember the other side too: that also means the greatest heroes will also be men. Which is why the 911 first responders that selflessly gave their lives to rescue others were mostly men. But no one ever talks about that, they only talk about the bad stuff that men do.

Bullying is a massive problem, and oftentimes "school shooters" are victims of bullying who see killing their abuser as their only way out. Funny how we grant more leniency to women who commit murder for that reason than children.

The majority of these case studied the shooting is a murder-suicide and they intended to die during the altercation by either shooting themself or being killed by cops. Intervention must be holistic and seen as a cry for help when talks of violence or suicide comes up by individuals. The resources must be available for schools to intervene in the mental health of the individual. Many times teachers, administrators and staff don’t know how to handle crisis intervention and deescalation when students show signs of this behavior. In one particular situation it was the janitor that intervened and talked a student down it’s not always the teachers who can help a student.

Another incident a student had two shotguns and was ready to shoot the entire cafeteria when the principal came in and talked to him for a while and talked him down and saved those kids..that same principal was interviewed and asked what can we do to prevent Maas shootings and he gave one word as the answer: RELATIONSHIPS. Strong, healthy relationships between students and the adults in the buildings are the best way to prevent this from happening. Students must also feel comfortable reaching out to an adult if they witness odd behavior from one of their peers as well.

Structural enablers: ease of access to guns, poor mental health services, large income gap (hopelessness).

Social: youths are more radical than older people, copycat - people have a template and there is a lot of material online, online fame and recognition on apps and internet. Political support for it in some radical circles.

Personal: mental health issues (depression), bullying, substance abuse, personality disorders.

It's a combination of many factors. There's a mental health epidemic in the US which definitely contributes towards the problem and fatherlessness seems common among school shooters. But the larger problem is simply access to firearms. Other countries have poor mental health, fatherlessness, and even the same toxic culture of demonizing men, but they don't have the same problems with school shootings. What sets the US apart from everywhere else is how easy it is to access firearms and how many there are within households.

there's always a way to rebel. It became school shooter/terrorist. It used to be more serial killers, and instead of Islam there were communists. My understanding is up until very recently crime has been down for decades. We are not becoming more violent.

Honestly, I think a big part of it is the media circus around it all.

These lonely, fucked-up young men know that a significant school shooting will be all over the news, and that they'll be the star of the show. It's likely the only fame and recognition they'll ever get in their lives, and they may feel like it's the only way anybody will ever pay attention to them or their grievances.

(Does that justify anything? Absolutely hell no. But if we're going to fix this problem, we first need to understand the problem.)

There's been some reform on this front ... with news deliberately trying to focus more on the victims than the shooter. But it's too little too late. Every time one happens and the media goes into a frenzy over it, they're inspiring the next one. And they'll have to stop doing that for years before it has any effect, because the young men doing the shootings now grew up during the media frenzy days and are still in that mindset.

A major factor is that the more school shooting news there is, the more kids will be primed to do a school shooting.

So kids who might have done a solo suicide before, or acted out in another way, have it drilled into them these days that the ultimate acting-out is always the school shooting. In a way, the more safety elements that kids have to be exposed to (like lockdown drills) the more we guarantee that kids are thinking about school shooting. In almost all the cases of school shootings that I've heard of, the kids had spent time getting really interested in the subject first - finding videos of other school shootings, reading other kids' manifestos, etc. Anything that contributes to keeping school-shootings top of peoples' minds makes a little more likely that when someone goes over the top, that's their "big idea." Because it's not like kids haven't had access to guns before in this country, or haven't been going through shit before.

We can see that comparatively more boys were killing themselves in the 90s, but there were still way less school shootings. I am very concerned that the safety measures we scare kids with today are all-but guaranteeing a future supply of school shootings, and that ideally, kids do not spend much time thinking about the topic - and news shows *never* spend time giving posthumous platform to the shooters, speculating about them, making them retroactively famous.

They're not. I wish I could find the LA Times article that published the criminal justice statistics. I'm going from memory here. A school-aged child (3-18) is 10 times more likely to be shot in a restaurant. 20 times more likely to be shot in a garage, 52 times more likely to be shot on the street, and 200 times more likely to be shot in their home than a school. Schools are phenomenally safe places for children, compared to many other environments. A better question to ask is why do we have the perception that there are so many school shootings? Why are the shootings that occur elsewhere not reported so frequently? Mass shootings are .5% of all firearm-related homicides (this stat I was able to find: https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2019-09-01/mass-shooting-data-odessa-midland-increase).

I had wondered how much of this was a case of increased frequency vs increased reporting and surprisingly yes there really has been a dramatic increase in cases from 2018 onwards, almost doubling in that year and not coming down. The increase however is not in the kind of cases we typicaly think of as school shootings.

Active shooter events, those that follow the patterns of Columbine, Sandy Hook or Virginia Tech make up a small fraction of school shootings with an upper bound of 11 in a year (2018) and only 2 this year.

Most school shootings are conventional gun crime that takes place in a school environment, no less horrific certainly but a different pattern and likely influenced by different causes.

I suspect that much of the recent spike in school shootings matches the related spike in overall gun violence from 2018 onwards and is primarily a matter of economic hopelessness.
