I live in a large urban area and because of this I am routinely exposed to many homeless people living their lives. Now normally - or at least in the daytime - this is not an issue.

But when night falls the last thing I want is for someone to approach me asking for money, food, or who knows what. And don't get me wrong - I realize that homeless people are not there by choice and many face mental illnesses - I just am more comfortable not being approached at night.

And wow, do my female friends find that amusing. I hate being a 6+ foot tall man sometimes because I'm assumed to be invulnerable - but today I walked home from an outing and specifically walked the route where I would be accosted the least. I would have thought I would have gotten empathy because I'm out there and afraid, but apparently that's mostly something we allow women to feel. Why's that? I'm no more safe due to my size, I don't fight people and I never will.
