I lost over 100lbs about 7-9 years ago at the end of high school. I was the funny fat kid, so it wasn't too bad, but I was also the kid who was questioned about every fart, while always reminded that I was fat, and smelly. If people told me I was perfect just the way I was, I would probably be 400lbs right now. Japanese are among the healthiest people on earth. A culture that eats mostly seafood and veggies and walks and bikes everywhere is not going to have an obesity issue. If they see a fat person and shame them, it's because it's not common within their culture. But saying that fat shaming is the reason they have a low obesity rate is absurd.
They shame fat people because they know that it's bad and unhealthy. Fat shaming does help contribute to reducing the number of fat people. How do I know? America used to do the same thing. Then came the 90s, with anti bullying campaigns and etc. When we stopped fat shaming, people stopped being fat. There has to be an active, observable, current punishment for obesity. Knowing that you will die from a heart attack at an early age isn't enough for some people, but active, constant shaming affects their psyche in a way that consequences which are far off in the future don't.
Additionally, your statement that diet and exercise reduce weight seems to run in contrast with the current feminist narrative, which is "I just have a glandular problem, you misogynist!"
We need to do everything we can to fight fat. 70% of Americans are overweight. Many are so large they need 2 watches, because they are so wide that each side of their ass is in a different time zone.
