From modern standards, Socrates was ”fat phobic”.

Anyone in history who couldn’t get enough food, most of history, would be confused by fat people.
My family cake from nothing, 50+ people and not one fat person, so it’s very confusing to me people who struggle with weight

Apparently, being slim is a privilege now, that somehow you inherited from your ancestors.

Absolutely. Stay leaner and healthy, but don't overdo it. And when you work out be safe, far too many of these idiots today are unsafe and do something stupid and get themselves injured, or even kill themselves.

Would you replace swimming for jogging? Or would you end up with different issues? Shoulders instead of knees?
[–]AlexanderRamsey186115 points16 points17 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Swimming is very low impact vs running/jogging and requires more energy per yard/meter traveled
[–]Thatguywhoplaysgames15 points16 points17 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Swimming is a fantastic sport and works pretty much everything. I’ve been a competitive swimmer my whole life. I am now starting to see shoulder issues, but that’s because I was a butterfly swimmer, and from maybe age 8/9 to 18 I trained 3 times per week every week bar maybe 5-8 weeks a year. At one point I was doing 7 times per week for a year and a half.
Shoulder problems shouldn’t really be an issue with people who just swim for fitness if you have good technique. YouTube is such a good resource for this, and adult swimming lessons are a thing too. Also most decent clubs have Masters squads for anyone 18+ with varying degrees of ability.
[–]Careful_Description1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Functional training is the balance my friend. The athletic look if you're wondering where it leads. Grants good cardiovascular, strength (not like the jacked looking bro lifters but good enough), burst mobility, coordination, balance, athletic mind muscle connection, etc.
Check out Jeff Cavalier.

Student PTA here. Swimming is a very good sport for those who have joint issues and is a great way to stay active while still maintaining the integrity of your joints. Biking is another good sport to take care of your knees. After years of hard labor, this is what my own father does now since walking and jogging hurt his knees too much.
[–]1stevelation0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Cycling, though you won’t burn as much fat. Jogging is king.
[–]AcrobaticAge0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I would do both, but never overdo them.
Shoulder and knee issues are quite common on competitive swimmers. Hell, every single competitive physical activity (aka sport) is terrible for health.
Do whatever you like; just stay away from that "no pain, no gain" mentality.

And some claim the ancients were primitive and modern society is the pinnacle of modern civilization. Hardly.
[–]smellsmira42 points43 points44 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Modern amenities are nothing more than distractions from man's primal nature. We get glimpses of these tendencies during big events like Katrina etc.
It will be worse if shit ever hits the fan as people are more needy, greedy, selfish, and entitled than ever. Think of the people during the depression. They were for the most part self reliant I ways. They grew gardens and had basic skills to get things done. People also cared and watched out for their neighbors etc. Not today. Everything is me me me. If shit ever hits the fan there will be pillaging like nothing seen before.

The pinnacle of humanity is either long past us or is still to be reached, if one thing i can say for sure, it is that we certainly dont reach our full potential in this so called ''modern civilization''. There are just too many things going horribly wrong and it seems like every day we stray further away from what made humanity so great...

Need to get into shape? Buy hand weights, produce, and protein powder. Can't afford it? Get a job or start a business. There is no excuse to be obese today, there is just no accountability for the high-calorie intake sedentary lifestyles of the west. Quit soda and any sugary drinks first, increase your fiber/vegetable/fruit and lean protein intake.
[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
“Start your own business”. Not really good advice, much more difficult than said. If you give me the capital and a great product, then sure, but I hate when people just say “start a business”.
[–]DarkNights2925 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Protein powder isn’t needed, I prefer real food.
[–]gprime4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
There is no excuse to be obese today,
Personal preference would seem to be the obvious exception. There are people who do not value physical fitness and who derive more pleasure from a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet than they would from the alternative.
[–]SolidFinding2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
They used to call us MGTOW, and we used to go our own way rather than advocate fucking Sparta. I'm one of those people (well, 50% anyway). I moderate my calorific intake so as to not be overweight, but I don't value physical exercise at all. I enjoy beer. I don't enjoy getting out of breath or twisting my ankle in the park. I look forward to us having a MGTOW community where we can each go our own way one day, but I don't see it happening. None of us have "rights" in this forum - everyone is reclaiming their masculinity for the good of the white western world, or some shit. Total infiltration by Return of Kings and Jordan Peterson tradcons. I'm out of here.
[–]gprime1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm sticking around because there can be some decent discussion, but I do agree that as this sub has grown, a lot of people who don't really get MGTOW have become louder parts of the discussion, from authoritarian statists to tradcons. Seeing shit ranging from there being a moral obligation to be fit, to Holocaust denial (in the comments, thankfully not the topics yet) certainly makes this place less desirable. But there also isn't a better sub here for MGTOW, or off of reddit to my knowledge. So I take the good with the bad.

[–]McDingleberry690 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It probably won't even get you laid
Big ehhhh on that one. And what's wrong with being healthy? We were meant to be active, that is why today's society is disgusting. It encourages a lazy and sedentary lifestyle. You do you, but I've bulked up to 300lbs before and I felt unhealthy as shit. Heavy breathing, sleep apnea, would get winded if I walked for more than 2min at a time. And I wasn't just fat, I had put on a metric fuck load of muscle and was moving some serious weight in the gym. I can't even fathom how horrible the people who are 300lbs of pure fat feel, probably at least 5 times worse. All the women in my family are obese, their life is so limited by shit eating non existent exercise habits. I can hear them huffing and puffing just from getting off the couch and walking 10ft to grab another can of soda to pop open.
Not wanting to be fit is your choice, albeit a retarded one as why gimp the only vessel you have (as far as we know), but if that's what makes you happy then go for it.
[–]MechanizedGamer12 points13 points14 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I don’t know why it is, but I just can’t think of many things I care less about than being physically fit.
I weigh 135 pounds and I am a twig. I like my body and have hardly any downsides to being as weak as I am physically in the modern era as all of my utility comes from my mind.
I’m sure I’m missing out on something. But I cannot see a reason for hyping it up to this degree.
[–]868-hack11 points12 points13 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
The advantages of good health should be self-evident. If you get plenty of light exercise, have a good diet and lead an otherwise healthy lifestyle, you're pretty much set.
The other side of the coin is strength and athletic ability, the importance of which is far easier to argue as it is indeed unnecessary for 99% of jobs and everyday tasks. However, being skinny and weak sucks balls. I was always the first to get picked on. Having since grown into someone who's average height and weight and in above average shape, I can tell you the social impact alone makes strength training worth it.
You don't have to look like a freak; I find people mostly pick on those they're >90% sure can't fight back so really you only need to look like someone who can take care of himself, someone who has the potential to do damage if shit were to go down. If you surpass that bar, I can absolutely tell you that most men and women will treat you differently.
Fuck it, as a super skinny dude I was still stronger than chicks but the problem was they wouldn't believe it till I arm-wrestled every goddamn one of them, and even then I got a bunch of excuses brushing it off. If you're a bit bigger you won't get challenged nearly as often because everyone just intuitively accepts that you're stronger than women and probably as strong as most guys in the room.
Finally, if you're in a more civil social circle than I am, you might never get directly challenged like I've described here. But make no mistake: high-class people aren't better people. They won't bully you into submission but they'll absolutely judge you for your qualities. If you're skinny and weak, they'll hold it against you one way or another.
[–]brandon_51012 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah I agree dude just be happy with the body you have skinny people live way longer on average because the heart does less work

Easier for him to say it because men back then did nothing but worked as farmers, labouring, hunted animals to survive and were soldiers who trained daily and fought in endless wars.
Compared to today where we’re surrounded by sugar, technologies, fed with the 3-6 meal scams and we have it too easy which makes it much difficult for us to stay in shape.

This is absolutely true. Doing any physical activity over time will make you better at not only the sport you do, whether it is going to the gym, playing basketball, running, swimming, but will also help you shift your mindset. You should focus on yourself, on your own health, your own physique., your own success. Stop unnecessarily wasting time on other people. Working on your self is the best way to become a better person overall and what better way than physical training is there really?
Trust me, as you progress in whatever physical activity you do, you will automatically start to feel better as a person in every life situation.

Been working out for many years and share a highly underrated tip that hopefully can benefit you guys.
Look into SMR (self-myofascial release). Specifically, check out the Hyperice Hypervolt.
More convenient than foam rollers (static or electric). Can use daily pre- or post-workouts and watch your recovery skyrocket.
I've done intense workouts back-to-back using this vs. before had to rest for longer periods due to tight muscles.
i got one for my calf muscles and legs in general. i recommend it if athletics is a big part of your life, although its very expensive.
