Religious texts are the memory we have of the ancient experiences in society. Lessons that accumulated and were registered in those books, so to save the planet from doom.
You can say all you want about abrahamic religions, and i will agree with you. But then you look at non-religious people and they are worshipping materialism, celebrities, drugs, fast food, or some other sort of coping mechanism, and they will die miserable deaths. Religion was created as some sort of basic guideline for most people. You that are smart, you can shit all over religion, sure. But once the people have no religion, you will have no peace either, and your world will be eaten away fast. Sure technology, history can replace religion, but they are very expensive/resource consuming, not available everywhere, and people will still be completely depressed and angry with it anyways.
Perhaps the answer lies exactly on the why was religion created and what happened before it was created. Because it is essentially a coping mechanism. If it is a coping mechanism, then what happened in the world that made us need to find such coping? What is the garden of Eden? What is the snake, and why Eve gave the apple to Adam? Those are obviously metaphors, we know very well what happened.
History is a much better teacher than religion ever will be.

Ten thousand years ago some guy lives for 70 years, the people in his tribe always thought he was clever, he often found solutions to problems that nobody else could find.
