Divorced dad here.
When a guy tells me that he is getting married, I tell him congrats but I ask him why he wants to get married. Usually, I hear the line of 'I love her' or 'it's the right thing to do.'
You can still love someone and spend your life with them. There really isn't an upside for a male to get married. There are countless downside such as potential alimony, etc.
My only piece of advice for a guy that wants to get married today, is to read the 'Duluth Wheel of Control' and think about it. At first, they will think it won't happen to them. Then, they will notice the subtle hints of feminist 'empowerment.'

Not everywhere has common law. Its pretty uncommon in the states. Only NY and CA have it as far as I'm aware.

Here are the states that officially recognize common law marriage.
Alabama Colorado District of Columbia Georgia (if created before 1/1/97) Idaho (if created before 1/1/96) Iowa Kansas Montana New Hampshire (for inheritance purposes only) Ohio (if created before 10/10/91) Oklahoma (possibly only if created before 11/1/98. Oklahoma’s laws and court decisions may be in conflict about whether common law marriages formed in that state after 11/1/98 will be recognized.) Pennsylvania (if created before 1/1/05) Rhode Island South Carolina Texas Utah
Regardless, most, if not all states, will allow the women to sue you for support/assets if you've been with her long enough. Also, if you've lived in one of the above states, most other states will uphold the marriage. And prenuptial agreements will always be challenged and in many cases, be won by the women, especially if she fabricates some story that somehow she was abused and the judge buys it (which almost always, they do).

Ya know, I remember in my late 20s dating women in their early 30s and then breaking up with them b/c I didnt want to take those last few years of their youth, rather than them chasing some dude who would actually marry them. Every guy ought to be consulting a divorce attorney either before they get married or during.
My simp friend owned his house and his car, then he got married.
Wife tells him they should buy a new house, their "forever" house. He agrees and they go house shopping. They sold the old house and both names go on the new deed. This was 18 months ago.
Obviously they're getting divorced, but in MI the laws say that if you enter the marriage with a home/car you keep the home/car. But since he put his money into a common bank account and then bought a house, everything is 1/2 hers. I can't imagine this girl is smart enough to have researched divorce laws to have planned all this, but it sure does seem like it.
He doesn't have alimony or child support (shared custody) so I guess he got off pretty well, but he still had to pay her like 40k to go away.

If you still play this crazy game, do not marry cohabitate or have kids with a woman. Always wear a spermicide condom, ALWAYS. Document all interactions with text messages before and after. This doesn't necessarily protect you but it does make a DA less likely to prosecute a false rape or DV charge. Stay away from single moms and married women (who will cry rape if they're caught cheating).
And one other element I've found helps weed out the more crazy girls (all girls are crazy to some extent), only ever date girls who had a good relationship with their father.
