i think if financial abortion was a thing you would see much less single mothers because they know upfront they cant milk someone for money. this would also lower the amount in men in prison because of child support so maybe more money is free to spend on a parent who actually cant afford food.

child support should absolutely be capped to at least $250 per month, children do not become more expensive based on the fathers income. child support should be an equal contribution to the child, not a life support for the mothers to buy luxury items and not work.

A: Absolutely not. The main reason people don't pay child support is because they are poor. The deadbeat dad is a myth. This myth has resulted in mostly minority males getting thrown into jail or shot on the street while trying to evade law enforcement.

The problem is there are things here I can't really nitpick but we'll see what happens, got no problem with this particular statement.

A: None. Most children don't earn money. We have child labor laws against such nonsense. Children aren't entitled to money.

If children aren't entitled to money and aren't allowed to earn money how do you expect them to survive? Like it or not, the responsibility of the child lies with the living parents or guardians so somebody has to take care of them. I actually think it's wrong that children can't at the very least get a part time job and earn their own money, especially if they're from poor families, as long as it doesn't effect their education it should be encouraged. It also means that when they leave school they'll have something on their CV or Resume besides some useless qualifications that might end up obsolete in the next couple of years.

A: To keep children fed, educated, and clothed. I think 99% of the reason is to keep the children off the federal safety net. I don't want my taxes to pay for bastard children and I'm willing to pay taxes so no child will ever starve. I've heard of financial abortion, which sounds cool, but, at the end of the day, I don't want to pay taxes to feed your kid. I also don't want your kid to starve, I guess I'm human.

In principle the child support money goes to the children, but in practice it is far different. I have heard proposals awhile back from here that mothers who get child support should have to provide receipts and so on to prove they're using the money on their child rather than just getting easy income from the father which I think would be a great way to stop fraud.

A: No, I don't. The child support system throws poor people into jail. It's much more expensive as a society to put otherwise productive people in prison. As much as I don't want to pay for people's bastard children, I know that I don't want families to break up and there shouldn't be a system that incentives destroying families. There shouldn't be financial advice columns about how to best invest your child support money.

Don't see much wrong with this argument.

A: Child support should be capped at a reasonable level. $200 or $300 a month. If a person is unable to make the payment, I would rather pay the difference with my taxes. It's far cheaper than paying a judge to throw a "deadbeat" into prison.

This is actually a pretty intelligent idea, not only would it prevent mothers from scamming fathers for their income and taking everything it would keep costs low. If the mothers want more than that, they'll have to work for it, child support shouldn't be a way for women to get themselves pregnant and con men out of all their money and leave them homeless. I've seen in other countries that they sometimes do this even with stuff like car insurance or health insurance, they put caps on the maximum amount you can claim and I do agree that this is something that should be done most likely with child support.

If you need more than say $500 a month to live on, you're lying, it's that simple, the only way it could really be justified is if there are multiple children in which case you could impose a limit per child rather than letting people claim however much they want.

I'd also argue that mom should need to provide receipts for everything, and get regularly audited.

The purpose would be to make it not the person's child. It would have to be done prior to the cut-off for abortions or other such methods, not into the child's life. As such, it is no worse than the government covering adoptive children.

Speaking from experience, this is straight up horseshit. My dad was not broke and he always tried to skip on paying child support even though my mom had argued FOR HIM in court to get a very low and reasonable amount. I agree that deadbeats shouldn't be locked up in debtor's prison, but to argue they don't exist is just a lie.

Otherwise I agree mostly with what you said. Keep child support at a reasonable level for food and clothing, and tack on a little more to help with housing.

I think the child support model should be more along the lines of a receipt/reimbursement system. Parent caring for child keeps receipts, parent paying support pays them. Not blindly, mind you, a neutral third party goes through them and removes all non-child expenditures. I'll pay for diapers and food, not for a bottle of vodka or condoms for you and your new bf.

I'd agree with just about everything except the figure. I think even sums like US$200 or US$300 are very high.

It doesn't take much to feed and clothe a child. I don't know the exact prices in the US but I know in Europe you can eat a lot and healthy enough for around US$60 equivalent as a large male. Sure it isn't steak every night but you'll have more than enough meat and protein to enjoy your diet.

Clothing is actually dirt cheap if you shop at discount retailers. I don't see why I should be paying for your child's designer shoes or cloths when I shop at discount stores (I could afford to spoil myself but I don't because I'm fiscally responsible).

Maybe a reasonable solution lies with places where children can pick up cheap sufficient meals similar but better than soup kitchens (school cafeterias come to mind).

Should anyone be jailed for failure to pay child support?

Anyone who agrees to parenthood prior to birth of child or decides to give birth to a child should be responsible for providing the child with basic necessities. They are still responsible for providing for the child when they want to distance themselves from the child, that is in the form of child support. People not meeting their child support requirements, should be pressurized to meet their targets, but jailing them is not a solution, especially in cases of poverty.

No. People should not be imprisoned for failure to pay. There are other methods of satisfying debts.

2. How much money does a child deserve?

Enough to be healthy and educated. No child asked to be born. Children are the direct result of intentional action on behalf of at least one adult, the mother, possibly with a second person.

3. Why do we have child support?

Ideally, this should be for a parent (of any sex) who reneges on their responsibility to care for a child they agreed to parent.

Here the state calculates what the level of child support should be based on age and number of children. They also calculate how much the paying parent can afford based on income. This might be all the money the primary carer recieves but often the state, or tax payer, tops it up. This ensures the primary carer gets the money they need but not at the expense ruining the other parents life.

Specifically I take issue with number 1. We got rid of debtor's prisons for a reason. No debt should ever put you in prison.
