Equal car insurance was literally called a tax on women when it dropped in the UK, ironically, this happened at the same time the ACA was called "equality for women" in the US.

When I was 20 I bought my first car for $600 and paid around $300/mo, so I would buy that car six times a year in insurance. I'm 25 now and it's not much better.

That's funny, because in the UK we have a car insurance company (I think) called "drive like a girl" that gives you a black box to put in your car where if you drive 'like a girl' you get a discount on your car insurance, because they've apparently had enough of girls getting higher premiums on their car insurance. Men can use it too, if they drive 'bad enough'. (No, seriously.) This is obviously stupid for 2 reasons:

1: If you're a car insurance company, giving rewards for driving badly is not going to turn a profit.

2: While they are obviously trying to decrease sexism in car insurance, the way that they offer rewards based off of driving badly, or 'like a girl', automatically shows they are playing along and using the very stereotypes they are trying to avoid.

Edit: don't trust me on this one completely, this is just what I've inferred from listening to their radio adds.

This thread is weird. I have USAA and only pay about $79 a month. Have full coverage, free rental car if my car gets damaged, only have to pay the first $100 on repairs.

$220 a month with a 2001 honda civic. Been driving since I was 17 with 1 not at fault accident where I was rear-ended at a dead stop.

220 was the best I could find. The average quote ranged from 350-400

£250 a month with a 2005 skoda Fabia when I started driving at 18. For all you Americans, that's currently $414 a month. I accept no complaints about US car insurance costs

The European Court of Justice ruled a few years ago that you can't discriminate based on gender in cases like this, which applies both when this ban favors men (e.g. car insurance) and when it favors women (pensions etc.).

I think if the risk is different, different rates should be allowed, but at least the ruling didn't protect just one gender.

Though now that I think about it, men probably lose out overall - pensions are much more economically significant than car insurance or any other kind of insurance with gender disparities that comes to mind, and the difference in life expectancies is substantial. Also, most health insurance wasn't affected by the ruling because it's a public system, but that just means that the rates have always been unisex (in favor of women).

Tell me about it. I'm a huge fan of cars. I have a 1988 Land Cruiser which costs around 110 a month to insure. It gets really lousy fuel economy (10), but I love it. I'd love to buy a little commuter economy car, but all the rates rates are at least 150-200 a month. Which makes it unaffordable. And I'm not letting these fucks determine what vehicle I drive.

If I were black and being charged more, people would be rioting in the streets. But since I'm a young, white male, it's okay to fuck me.

Insurance should be able to do their jobs, that is using any risk factor to calculate their fees, both in car insurance and health care.

I dismiss all liberal arguments about community rating so long as they allow these discriminatory practices among car insurance companies.

They are clearly full of shit, and did this entirely because they thought it was easier than fixing the entire problem. Which proves that they don't give a shit about injustices done to men the way they care about injustices done to women.

Equality means Equality, not endless bleating about how this was 'the best you could do'.

I actually don't have a problem with men paying more for car insurance for that exact reason. Statistically we are more costly from an insurance point of view, and if that's the model we're going to go with then that's fine with me.

What bugs me is that this practice is encouraged, but charging women more for health insurance is not only illegal but branded as misogynistic, so men are forced to subsidize women's health insurance but the reverse is not true when it benefits them. Male dollars and male bodies are always more expendable apparently.

From my understanding (which is unreliable at best), it's not because males are more aggressive, but males are more likely to be in an accident. It's similar to the fact that your rates change based on which neighborhood you live in. You might be the best driver in the world, but if you're surrounded by learning drivers, you're more likely to get into an accident, so you're going to pay more.

I'm almost positive that women get in more accidents and more expensive accidents than men. How come this is never challenged? Even MRAs seem to take it as a given, but I just don't believe it. Especially if you disregard teen drivers.

You forget that insurance companies exist solely to make money. It's not a rights issue. It's an investment issue.

I didn't get my first car until I was 24 (last March) so I avoided the horrible expensive insurance bracket, (I'm also male) with a starting rate of $425 for six months, but insurance companies make most of their money off of people just under our age, so unless you live in a state that doesn't force you to have car insurance, we're fucked.
