[–]SweetiePieJonas 46 points47 points48 points 11 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link
In the interest of accuracy, you should know that rape victims are roughly 50/50. Rapists are roughly 60% male, 40% female.
Still a lot closer to parity than ludicrous claims of 99%+ of rapists being men.
[–]flyingwolf 16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
And considering the stigma around men filing rape cases and the large proportion of women filing false rape cases, we can probably look at those numbers with a bit of salt.

Those numbers come from the Centers for Disease Control's 2010 Sexual Violence Victimization study. The study itself classifies men being "forced to penetrate" as sexual assault instead of rape, but counting it as rape (which I would argue is the only sane way count it; rape is forced sex, not forced penetration) gives you those numbers.
[–]daxorion27 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Just as a matter of curiosity, are there any sources for this other than the CDC study? I'm not saying that study isn't credible, but it's the only source I personally have ever heard of for this particular stat and it'd be nice to have another source (or sources) to corroborate it with.
[–]therealmasculistman 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The false accusation rate for rape is 60%. The reasons given for this false accusation rate: spite, revenge, even boredom. These are the cases where the accuser deliberately lied. This is from a U.S. Air Force study by Dr. Charles McDowwell. From the book The Myth Of Male Power by Warren Farrell.
[–]daxorion27 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Okay, I just googled those, they seem to be heavily criticized (of course) but the methodology seems to be at the very least okay.
However, I'm searching for studies to back up previously mentioned stats on gender distribution in cases of rape. False accusation statistics, while certainly important to men's right in general are not quite what I was looking for.
[–]SweetiePieJonas 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That number comes from the CDC study.
[–]daxorion27 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Also some contries define female on male as sexual assult rather then rape. So you have to check up the law as well as taking in the rate of unreported cases. Hard to find a true awnser...

CDC report:
http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/pdf/nisvs_report2010-a.pdf
Unfortunately they decided not to count "forced to penetrate" as rape (where a person - either by use of alcohol, threats, dependence or any other way - forced a man to penetrate them against the man's will), although the FBI does count it as rape.
The data is there, but you have to add it yourself to see comparisons as their "rape" summaries don't include "forced to penetrate" which is the main way women rape men.
Now, in the link I gave you can look at pages 18,19, tables 2.1 (women) and 2.2 (men) you can see that the "number of women raped in the past 12 month" is 1,270,000, while the number of men "forced to penetrate in the past 12 months" is a very similar 1,267,000
YOu will notice that the lifetime number of people is much smaller for "made to penetrate" (5,451,000 vs. 21,840,000 women raped), but even then it's "just" a quarter. Not 1% or something like that.
There could be many reasons for this difference, from actual increase in prevalence in recent decades to change in public opinion so that men today understand it's possible to make them penetrate against their will (where people a few years ago would have assumed they must have wanted it if it was "possible"). I really can't speculate on that.
But who is the rapist in "made to penetrate"? Is it men raping men or women raping men?
On page 24 you can see:
The majority of male rape victims (93.3%) reported only male perpetrators.
but remember - this doesn't count "made to penetrate"! It only counts rape as penetration of the victim, which pretty much requires the rapist to be a man.
But the next sentence:
For three of the other forms of sexual violence, a majority of male victims reported only female perpetrators: being made to penetrate (79.2%), sexual coercion (83.6%), and unwanted sexual contact (53.1%).
So as you can see, "made to penetrate" happens almost as often as "rape" does to women, and 80% of the time, in "made to penetrate" the rapist was a woman.
This means we have 3:2 male:female rapist ratio (if we count all rapes - both of men and women) (note there was no 1-year data on rape of males by penetration)
This means rapists are 60% male and 40% female.
Edit:
Note the lack of female-on-female rape here. Because of the way the study defines rape, female on female rape is most likely not counted as rape in it but rather as "other sexual violence" (like female-on-male rape in the form of "made to penetrate" doesn't count as rape in this study)
I couldn't find a way to conclusively calculate this number though, but for a rough estimate we can look at how many females are the perpetrators of "other sexual violence". On page 24 we see:
Additionally, 92.5% of female victims of sexual violence other than rape reported only male perpetrators.
which leaves 7.5% where the perpetrator was female. Since the number of "other sexual violence" (page 18) is 6,646,000 for the last 12 months, that means 498,450 had female perpetrators. Compare that to the 1,270,000 number of rapes (same table), this means that up to 30% of women rapes could be female on female! (of course it could be much less too... we don't have the data here to say conclusively.
How do you get 3:2 ratio, given:
You will notice that the lifetime number of people is much smaller for "made to penetrate" (5,451,000 vs. 21,840,000 women raped), but even then it's "just" a quarter. Not 1% or something like that.
Sounds like even if all "made to penetrate" rapes were perpetrated by women then the ratio would be at most ~4:1. Unless if some of those women were raped by other females?
Great work though, nice to have a (well presented) source on this sort of information to stop bullshit statistics being thrown around, as that's how the whole "one in 4" thing started among many feminists.
I'm looking at the 12 month numbers rather than the lifetime, because I care about "now" more than "decades ago".
If we assume that feminism is working and the world is changing to treat women better, then we should also assume that women were raped much more often decades ago than they are now, especially since rape is taken much more seriously now in law enforcement (we also see that in 3rd world countries where rapes are taken much less seriously)
So comparing lifetime numbers would mix data from "now" with data that is far from the state we are in "now".
In addition - there are many reasons why men in the past would have been much less inclined to acknowledge they might have been the victim of unwanted sex. The rise in education about rape and consent also changed the way men view their own consent and sex lives.
So basically, I find the 12-month data to be much more representative of the current state of things.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Gah, thats a shit source. Not to discredit your work, I have read into that exact study just as you have, but the methods of data gathering for that study are extremely less than honest, so I can't count it as accurate.
That study used an incredibly loose definition of "rape" and "made to penetrate" which included having sex while drunk.
I honestly fully believe that more men rape women than women rape men, even as an anti-feminist, and I think that is very defensible. Its much much easier for a woman to get laid than a man, so the "need" to go through the whole rape process isn't there for women like it is for men.
The work you have done, though, is a great tool for arguing with the bat-shit insane feminists who quote the 1-4,5,6 study. Either they accept that the study was intentionally dishonest about extremely broadening the category of rape (so that most everything is rape), and this broadening is why it shows men are raped as much as women (when they are not - the classification of rape was just too broad), or they have to throw away all their feminist nonsense and "accept" that men are raped just as much as women.
[–]PurpleViolettron 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well, just to add a point or two in why it is theoretically believable, men are more likely to take risks. That's why men commit more crimes than women. Then you've got the diversity argument. You know, that argument that says there is more variety in men than in women because of the Y chromosome and the fact that males can afford to be more diverse evolutionarily? This leads to more men at both ends of every spectrum. And that includes men who have compromised moralities and don't understand the concept of consent.
[–]Men13 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
That study used an incredibly loose definition of "rape" and "made to penetrate" which included having sex while drunk
OK, but that's the feminist definition isn't it? But yea, that's shitty. If all sex while drunk is rape then, well... you know drinking is the first part of any of the very rare "us" time I have with my wife since the kids were born.
the "need" to go through the whole rape process isn't there for women like it is for men.
I would agree to that. But I also agree with the declaration that (most) rapes aren't about sex, they are about power control. So a spoiled rich kid who can literally get any woman he wants, can still be a rapist and is even the stereotipical rapist because he believes he deserves it (and really believes it's not possible for the victim to not want it).
Same here: a woman who can get "anyone she wants" might be much less inclined to take "no" for an answer or even to take "no" seriously, resulting in a "made to penetrate" rape that she will deny was anything but some "fun games".
Don't get me wrong - my "gut" tells me men rape more than women, probably at more than the 60:40 ratio. But my "gut" has no real reason to think that other than it's the impression I have of the world. That impression is mostly from the media, because, well, this kind of thing isn't something you run into in daily life with coworkers / friends / family. So my gut agrees with you, but my gut knows nothing really.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think I agree with this.
[–]Men13 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Sorry, confusing language. Wasn't trying to say you agreed with that. I meant I agree with the "feminist" declaration that most rapes aren't about sex, they are about control
However, I just want to make clear I mean rapes where the rapist knows they are committing rapes, which is very different than rapes of "we were both drunk" or similar

Rustles my jimmies when I hear criticism of that song. Yes, it's sleazy as fuck but what dance song isn't?
The lyrics of the song are basically about the blurred line the woman faces between flirting and staying faithful, I don't see how making the observation 'you know you want it' is offensive, like if I'm on a diet and someone sees me looking at a piece of chocolate and they say 'you know you want it' I'm not being raped, I'm being teased
[–]but_why_is_it_itchy 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I completely agree. That indignation was such a stretch. I couldn't believe how dramatic it became.
[–]NibblyPig 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The argument I mostly hear is that the title 'blurred lines' refers to having sex with someone quasi-against their will, i.e. rape but with ambiguous consent. Which in no way could it possibly mean if you actually listen to the lyrics. If I recall one line of the lyrics says the woman makes a move on the guy ("The way you grab me, Must wanna get nasty").
[–]GimmeSomeSugar 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Isn't it more so about the frustration of chasing a woman playing hard to get, because if she just went after someone she found attractive she'd get slut shamed?
I hate these blurred lines I know you want it I know you want it I know you want it But you're a good girl
And of course, people go nuts over the line "I know you want it", but those same people never mention what comes after it in the chorus:
The way you grab me Must wanna get nasty Go ahead, get at me
I think one theme of the song is how much easier life would be for both genders if slut shaming of women wasn't a thing. Seems quite sex positive for women in that regard.
[–]NibblyPig 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think you're right, I thought it meant she was already in a relationship but he does say nothing like your last guy.
I dunno about the slut shaming part, based on what you said I think he's just frustrated at the games, and the blurred lines representing her behaviour of whether she wants him or not. Whether that behaviour stems from slut shaming or is just general female courting behaviour I don't know.
Edit: Oh wait I guess you mean you specifically the 'but you're a good girl'. Hah. Think you're spot on.

I think anyone who holds an opinion like ol' greenie there, I think they know they can say absolutely anything at all and as long as they say historically and rape in there somewhere, it makes any idea palatable. I think they get a tiny smirk on their soul right before they do it, too. Equal treatment is something each and every one of us leaned in Kindergarten. We know when we're being fair and when we're taking advantage. And it's for this reason that if and when I see someone like greenie there spouting that BS with that seemingly untouchable chip on their shoulder {("Care to provide some...") <=== I mean the fucking tone of this 'question' here is inescapable.}, I see red, because I know that rationale wouldn't have held up in Kindergarten.
