So sarcasm...

[+]cottonthread -10 points-9 points-8 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I don't think it's so much that as the fact that in general men have a significant physical size and strength advantage over women which means we are much more capable of damage. This is why many men (myself included) have had it drilled into them that "you never hit a woman"

So to most people in order of terribleness: man hitting woman > man hitting man >= woman hitting woman (when women fight it can be vicious but many downplay it as a 'catfight') > woman hitting man.

This doesn't just come into play with gender dynamics of course, it's a pretty common trope for the heavy set bully to pick on the skinny kid. And of course an adult attacking a child is pretty heinous.

[–]SchalaZeal01 29 points30 points31 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

This is why many men (myself included) have had it drilled into them that "you never hit a woman"

The reason is not a size difference, because no one ever cared about small men. And this is told to young boys, who aren't bigger than young girls. The reason is both presumed weakness, but also presumed worth.

[–]jakelove12 21 points22 points23 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yup.

If it were about "size difference" or "strength", the imagery of a nerdy guy with broken taped-together glasses (because he gets punched in the face) would have the same emotional impact as imagery of a woman with a black eye.

But, as anybody who lives in reality knows, this is not the case.

[–]cottonthread 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Wouldn't the kid have a black eye too if they were punched with the same force?

[–]jakelove12 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Black eyes heal, glasses don't.

The point is that there's an implication of violence, and it's not met with the same gut-reaction of empathy and anger that would be present if the punch-receiver is a woman.

The imagery of a boy with a black eye is usually put in the context of some sort of nostalgic, boys-will-be-boys, "little rascal" tone.

The only image I know of that is in a similar tone featuring a girl is this one.

[–]cottonthread 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Wow, wtf is up with those images? Are they supposed to be ads? (First link didn't work for me btw)

ETA: For the glasses I wouldn't necessarily think punching unless it was heavily implied. Accidents happen where glasses get stepped on etc - they might just be too poor for new ones or something. I wear glasses and if they get hit with enough force I will get mild bruising and/or cuts on my face from the frames. For a full on punch I would expect significant looking facial trauma

[–]zen_affleck 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Many men have also had it drilled in them that your ability to take damage and accept danger and trauma is part inherently to you being a man

[–]Trajer 21 points22 points23 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I hope I don't just get downvoted to oblivion here, as I think the outrage over the advertisement is absolutely ridiculous.

That said, from what I've read, the biggest concern is not so much that it's in the movie, but that it's an advertisement posted on a billboard for all to see.

Now, if Colossus getting strangled by a piece of metal wielded by a woman was on a billboard, do I think people would be crying out?

Nope. Maybe some tumblr people who are triggered, but they'd be largely ignored outside of tumblr.

It is the same bullshit as the "fury road" is a feminist propaganda!!! According to mra's!!! It is just bullshit elevated to make news.

[–]ContHund 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Same with people genuinely upset over a the black/female leads in TFA. Like 4 people, most likely trolls, say something ridiculous and all of a sudden it's "widespread outrage."

[–]Trajer 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I dunno, I've seen some women post about it in my Facebook and the only outspoken feminists I'm friends with are typically pretty rational and not crazy.

So I just assumed this was a widespread outrage, haha

I can understand that PoV... but here is a poster of Rose McGowan from her movie "Jawbreaker".

[–]itiswednesday 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That image is from a series of fanmade posters and that's not even Rose McGowan.

[–]angry_cabbie 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Huh. Honestly did not know that. Was a top hit when I googled.

[–]youreallmeatanyway 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

How is a supervillain attacking another supervillain/hero an example of "casual gender violence" anyway. Isnt the very premise of comic books as a medium to be anything but "casual"?

[–]McFeely_Smackup 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

If Deadpool wasn't an example of "casual violence against men" while treating superhuman women as delicate flowers, then I must have misunderstood the message.

[–]MKostrikin 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

About an hour in there is a scene where Deadpool punches a lady, another lady jumps on his back.

He then has a dialogue about whether it was sexist to punch her or if it was sexist not to punch her. He then decides it is just cleaner to use a gun.

[–]Alkomb 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I regret not watching that movie, now.

[–]Hillary_For_Prison 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Go watch it. The movie is hilarious through and through. That particular scene had my wife and I laughing our asses off.

[–]Alkomb 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah, thanks! & awesome username!

[–]ExpendableOne 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Seriously, I loved the deadpool movie but, realistically, they played up that "women crushing/hitting a man in the genitals" like three times. They made an entire comedy out of a guy getting shot and mutilated. They made him threaten and beat up a guy at gun point, because some teenage girl wanted him assaulted. It was full of casual violence against men.

[+]Killashard 10 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

The girl didn't want him assaulted, she just wanted him to not stalk her any more and didn't care how it happened. It was not a victim-less crime.

[–]ExpendableOne 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He could have literally done nothing as far as we know, or it could have been circumstances that she took out of proportion entirely. Either way, he literally just fucked his shit up on her word(money) alone.

Yes. Feminists flipped out over the bottom left

[–]1031Vulcan 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What is the outrage over Apocalypse anyway? I haven't read anything about it, though I definitely believe idiots are outraged over it.

[–]RagingNerdaholic 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Given that it's Deadpool, I think he should be saying "fucking hypocrites."

[–]lporiginalg 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Are any of those billboards/advertisements tho or just scenes in films? Because that's apples and oranges tbh.

[–]Swiggy 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Because that's apples and oranges tbh.

If the billboard depicts a scene from the film then why isn't it relevant?

[–]lporiginalg 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The point is they were complaining about the violence being depicted on a billboard which is different than being depicted in a film, ie the billboard is more invasive.

Don't get me wrong I think it's a total nontroversy but if you want to prove that it's hypocritical you would need to find a billboard of a woman doing violence against a man, in my opinion.

Being downvoted for speaking the truth.

[+]GoForFive -12 points-11 points-10 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Easy counter to this is that those are from Deadpool: an anti hero parody movie. They'll just say it's making fun of the trope of women being choked and proving their point.

This would probly work better from a different movie.

[–]EmirikolWoker 17 points18 points19 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Like the number of times Mystique chokes men in the various other X-Men movies.

[–]GoForFive 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That and the fact that grabbing someone's neck is common in anything that shows fighting. Bar fight between two men or a bully picking on some boy? Pretty good chance of the exact same positions.
