Amazing how 53% of women and 48% of men is a positive thing. (Especially considering how Cornell had more male applicants..)

Let's put it another way: is it a reasonable possibility that a female applicant is three times more likely to be qualified than a male applicant?

Well, why would this be? AFAIK there is zero evidence that the average female high school student is more qualified for Engineering than the average male one, certainly not to that degree. So there would have to be a bias where underqualified male students were more likely to apply to Cornell than underqualified female students. One possible explanation of this could be that boys are less risk-averse and/or more tolerant of rejection, and so are more likely to apply to "long shot" schools whereas girls only apply to Ivy-League STEM programs if they're confident they're qualified to get in.

But does this hypothesis fit the data? Let's find out.

If Cornell accepts, say, 500 female and 500 male applicants, then given those acceptance rates there must be about 8330 male and 2780 female applicants, which means the application pool is about 25% female. Assuming that US undergrad engineering programs aren't overall biased towards female students and therefore that the National percentage of female engineering students listed is proportional to the national average of applicants, then women are applying to Cornell at about the same rate as nationally - they're slightly overrepresented, but there's a lot of potential sources of error.

We can clearly reject the hypothesis that Cornell is rejecting men at a higher rate because the gender ratio of applicants is skewed compared to the national average.

What if Engineering colleges on average are discriminating against women, and Cornell is the one with an unbiased admissions process? Well, again, this doesn't fit the data on acceptance rates; there is no support for the idea that their female applicants are better than their male applicants to an extent that would justify this.

Conclusion: Yes, Cornell is almost certainly discriminating against male applicants.

From that link in the picture 9500 men applied and 3800 women applied. Yet more women (694) than men (580) were accepted.

What's really telling isn't just that this is happening, but what the reaction is in places where opposition voices are drowned out. Once that happens, they stop trying to excuse shit like this with some politely-described voodoo magic interpretation of bogus statistics, and just go straight to mocking men who think it's unfair that they're being treated as lesser for having a dick.

This isn't a random statement, obviously this topic is elsewhere online right now, and those other discussions are disgusting.

For example, 7 qualified men and 3 qualified women apply. The 3 women are chosen only 1 man is chosen. Instead of maybe a 2:2 it goes 3:1 in favour of the women because according to the article itself:

These are various forms we see where advocacy stands against merit and a desired outcome trumps any hierachical choice.

So in the example 6 guys were probably shafted because the University is on advocacy trip to change "the stereotype scientist."

So yes dudes were discriminated against in an effort for Cornell to change industry optics.

Harvey Mudd is the same : link, as are many others if you search "Women in Engineering" . There are two clear ways to know they are consciously discriminating based on gender:

1) Enrolment rates (not acceptance rates) for women have not changed. This is what proportion of people actually applying are women, irrespective of whether they get in (not biased by university staff's acceptance criteria)

2) There was a 4x increase in 5 years, an unprecedented increase when the IT field nor their curriculum has changed enough in 5 years to warrant such a massive increase.

This is not just bad for men (fewer positions available) but particularly for women who may be underqualified for some prestigious universities. Note that these are the some of the top schools for IT. If you are accepting more women from the same small pool of female enrolments, then you must be accepting women with lower GPAs, which is going to make it difficult for them to do well.

We see this with affirmative action already, with minorities struggling to compete when they are overpreferenced for their GPA. It is what happens when you lower standards only for one group. You can see this as an under the table affirmative action for women.

And this is not in the slightest to say we shouldn't have women in tech, on the contrary by not lowering standards we ensure women come out of their degrees with high GPAs and strong skills. So it is in women's interest just as well to stop this discrimination / affirmative action from occurring.

I feel it cheapens the degrees of past women graduates of these institutions, but my opinion doesn't matter.

It could indicate discrimination against men, but not necessarily. It's possible that the women who applied really were more qualified.

However, given how large the gap is, I think that is unlikely.

I want this to happen. More women in universities. Why?

Because an impending disaster would be waiting. As more men fall out of jobs, as more men become less educated, there's going to be chaos in the social hierachy. When women expect men to pay for them and take care of them, they'll realise they no longer can.

If statistics has anything to show about how hard working men are compared to women, then companies will also feel the crunch after they hire more women.

It will take somethimg as extreme as this before people realise there is a crisis, and that is the discrimination of men.

Statisticaly speaking, in anything that requires high IQ, if males get the same judgement and the same education, there will be a higher proportion of males.

Clearly the answer is yes. If CU selected only on grades, the entire incoming year would be Asian. Since that's not what people want (including Asians coming to the US to study) it would create huge problems.

The goal of CU is to create an overall experience. And it turns out students of both sexes want approximately a 50:50 split.

Disclaimer: I don't work for CU or any other U for that matter. It's just common sense.

To be clear, this does not mean that CU doesn't discriminate in other ways. See comment below.
